Knee-high by the Fourth

Knee high by the Fourth is a proverbial measuring stick for farmers as a way of judging how well their corn crop is doing. Curt Goldsmith’s fields are much higher than this old adage, and some are as tall as he is. This field was planted on April 19. Goldsmith says that although the area has been receiving an abundance of rain, all it takes is a week of high temperatures and no rain to send crops into a state of drought.
