Arleen Anna Torbeck was born on May 30, 1924 in Shobonier, the daughter of William and Pearlnelda (Lehde) Torbeck. She married the love of her life, George Martin Sasse on January 10, 1942; together they raised two children and celebrated nearly 65 years of marriage before his passing on March 24, 2006.

Arleen was a homemaker and a very gifted seamstress; sewing many quilts and altering many wedding and bridesmaid dresses throughout the years. Though needlework was her gift, her true passion was working with the many children she taught in her 40-plus years of teaching Sunday School; having taught three generations in numerous families.

Mrs. Sasse was a lifelong member of Augsburg Immanuel Lutheran Church and the last surviving charter member of their Ladies Aid program.

She is survived by her daughter, JoAnn Givens of Shobonier; son, Jerry Sasse of Vandalia; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Sasse of Vandalia; sisters-in-law, Janice Torbeck of Vandalia and Dottie Torbeck of Champaign; grandchildren, Jascha and husband Derek Nestrick, Chelsa Sasse and fiancé Mike Schulte, Marc Sasse, and Alex Sasse; great-grandchildren, Chandler Sasse, Gracie Pruett, Preston Nestrick, Kendall Nestrick, and Sydnee Nestrick, and many nieces and nephews spanning several generations.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Nelson Torbeck and Elden Torbeck, and sister, Inez Gadel.
