Fayette County HCE
The Fayette County Home and Community Education Board members were asked to judge a public speaking contestant who was unable to attend the contest on June 25 at Brownstown Elementary School.
At 10 a.m. on June 27, Rachel Zimmerman of Vandalia gave her speech to the board and received a blue ribbon, a state fair ribbon and a superior ribbon. Her six-minute speech was on diseases that cause depression.
President Flo Allen opened the HCE meeting, with all giving the Pledge of Allegiance. In addition to Allen and Panzi Blackwell of the Sefton Unit, those present were Carol Bridges, Joyce Muller, Anita Smith and Debbie Segrest of the Vandalia Day Unit, Anna Jean Rhodes of the St. Elmo Unit and Karen Hyde of the Wheatland Unit.
The board voted to donate $25 to the Tools for School program.
For a Fayette County HCE fundraiser Streak-Less microfiber cloths are being sold for $4 each. They are “lintless, spotless and dustless,” and do everything one needs to do. Most of the units now have them for sale.
After the meeting Allen, Bridges, Mueller, Smith, Segrest, Rhodes and Hyde ate lunch at Capitol View Restaurant.
Lions Club
St. Elmo Lions Club is in District 1-M Zone 41 and it held the annual officer installation and banquet June 27 at Mary Ann’s Restaurant, with 15 members and a number of guests attending. The meeting opened with President Dave Maxey leading in the Pledge of Allegiance and Dan Laack leading in prayer.
The club has a membership of 21, of which 16 are officers for the 2016-17 year: Dave Maxey, president; Max Hollinshead, first vice; Dan Laack, second vice; Bob Wells, third vice; Don Crawford, secretary-treasurer; Mark Lash, tail twister; Randy Wolf, lion tamer; Dee Newberry and Le Mar Marchman, reporters; Bob Lowe and Pee Wee Denton, directors for 2016-17; and Richard Lowe and Roger Fulk, directors for 2016-2018. The membership committee is David Cox for 2016-17, Al Nevergall for 2016-18 and Holly Huffer for 2016-19.
Members attending were Don Crawford, Pee Wee Denton, Roger Fulk, Max Hollinshead, Holly Huffer, Dan Laack, Richard Lowe, Le Mar Marchman, Dave Maxey, Al Nevergall, Dee Newberry, Rex Reeder, Lloyd Stanley, Bob Wells and Randy Wolf.
St. Elmo HCE
Chairman Karen Wegscheid opened the St. Elmo Unit of Home and Community Education meeting held the afternoon of June 28 in the St. Elmo Public Library. Roll call, “Are you a minimalist or a pack rat?” was answered by Karen Denning, Mary Jane Mattix, Anna Jean Rhodes, Sharon Shelton and Wegscheid.
Minutes of the May meeting were approved. The June County HCE Board notes were read. Change was collected for Pennies for Friendship and other HCE expenses as needed.
The same officers were re-elected for 2016-17: Wegscheid, chairman and treasurer; Shelton, first vice; Denning, second vice; and Rhodes, secretary.
On display was the baby quilt the Fayette County HCE is selling tickets for to help with the county budget. The tickets are $1 each or six for $5. The drawing for the quilt will be at the October International Night program.
Another county fundraiser is the sale of Streak-Less microfiber cloths that are being sold for $4 each. Rhodes has them available from the St. Elmo Unit.
Dues were collected for the 2016-17 year.
Because July and August are special activity months, it was decided to go to Belleville to eat lunch in the House of Plenty on Tuesday, July 19, and leave St. Elmo at 10 a.m. At this meeting, the August activity will be discussed.
Wegscheid gave the special feature lesson, “Vinegar,” and Shelton gave the major lesson, “Simplify Your Life by Clearing the Clutter.”
