Louise E. Low, 85, Vandalia

Louise Elizabeth (Orth) Low, 85, of Vandalia, died on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012, at Friendship Manor in St. Elmo.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at Hohlt & File Funeral Home in Vandalia, with the Rev. Kurt Simon officiating. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until time of services on Monday at the funeral home. Memorials: Friends & Families of Fayette County Hospital or Alzheimer’s Association.

Mrs. Low was born on July 6, 1926, in Monroe, Mich., the daughter of Peter and Dora Grundman Orth. She married Raymond E. Low on Aug. 16, 1952, in Washington, D.C.; they divorced in Feb. 27, 1986.

She was a founding member of and served on the board of directors of Friends & Families of Fayette County Hospital for 10 years. She was a member of the FCH Auxiliary for many years, served as its vice president and served on the scholarship selection committee. She also delivered for Meals on Wheels for several years, and served on the boards of directors of FAYCO Enterprises and Operation OUTING. She was also a member of the Vandalia Woman’s Club-GFWC Illinois. She was appointed by the Fayette County Board to serve on the 377 Board for FAYCO from 1991-2000. She was also a member of First Presbyterian Church in Vandalia. She received an Abe Award from the Vandalia Chamber of Commerce in 1997.

She is survived by a son, John Low, M.D., of Olney; grandsons, Seth and Robert Low; and ex-husband, Raymond Low.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Robert Orth; and son, Scott Low.
