  • Cougars, Bombers fall in regional

    The South Central and Brownstown/St. Elmo baseball squads saw their seasons come to an end in regional play last week.
    In their regional championship, the Cougars were edged by Odin/Patoka, 6-5, at Lions Park in Kinmundy.
    South Central scored twice in the first inning, but Odin took the lead with a four-run third inning.
    The Cougars scored three runs in the top half of the fourth inning to lead 5-4, then Odin/Patoka closed out the game’s scoring with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.

  • Lady Cougars win regional title

    Zoe Johnston homered and Sydnee Garrett hurled a five-hitter as South Central won the school’s second regional and its first since 1994.
    South Central scored all of its runs in the sixth inning in the 5-1 win over Woodlawn on Saturday at Webster Field in Kinmundy.
    Down 1-0 going into the sixth inning, South Central took advantage of two Woodlawn errors and used a base hit by Lexie Reid, an RBI by Katie Shumate, a fielder’s choice and Johnston’s two-run homer.

    Vandalia Junior High School eighth-grader Dawsyn Evans placed sixth in the pole vault at the IESA State Track Meet on Saturday.

    Fayette County will be represented at the IHSA Boys State Track Meet this week by six entries.

  • Warrior Cancer scramble Saturday

    The Warrior Nation Cancer Foundation will hold its inaugural golf scramble fundraiser this Saturday at Colonial Golf Course in Sandoval.
    The entry fee for the scramble, which begins with a shotgun start at 10 a.m., is $65 person ($240 per team).
    The entry fee includes food, beverages and door prizes.
    Hole sponsorships are available for $50.
    WarriorNationCancerFoundation and be approved by the foundation’s board of trustees.
    Donations to the fund can be dropped off at First National Bank in Patoka.

  • Cougars top Altamont, Dieterich

    South Central defeated Altamont 4-3 on Saturday.
    Game stats were not available at press time.
    The Cougars were to enter postseason play on Wednesday, facing Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran at 4:30 p.m. at Lions Field in Kinmundy.
    Last Friday, the Cougars defeated Dieterich, 12-1, in a five inning home contest.
    Trent Geiler struck out nine and allowed six hits to pick up the win, and was also 3-for-4 at the plate.
    Cauy Blomberg homered for South Central.

  • Lady Cougars advance in regional

    South Central scored 11 runs in the fifth inning to defeat Clay City, 14-4, in five innings on Monday and advance to the regional championship.
    The Lady Cougars will now face Woodlawn in the Hutsonville Regional title game at 11 a.m.
    Sydney Garrett pounded two home runs and was the winning pitcher for South Central, which is now 13-7 on the season.
