  • Senior Spotlight: Dathan Berning

The major highlights of Dathan Berning’s final season as a Vandalia High School athlete came during the basketball season, but that didn’t stop the 2012 graduate from pursuing a college opportunity in a different sport.

Vandalia’s boys basketball most valuable player this past season, Berning probably could have tried to show off his skills to earn a spot on a small school’s team, but he instead decided to continue focusing on baseball, and that landed him a spot at Greenville College.

  • For the veterans

Two local veterans were honored prior to Vandalia’s opening game in the Sr. Legion district tournament, and the players furthered honored those men throughout the tournament, by playing with a competitive spirit.

Dwight Hagy and Floyd Meseke, both World War II veterans, were honored in a short ceremony on Saturday night before Post 95 defeated Salem, 9-6, with players from each team shaking hands with and thanking the veterans before taking the field.
