  • Vandals get No. 2 seed for...

    The Vandalia High School boys basketball team received the No. 2 seed in the Hillsboro Regional.

    Teutopolis received the top seed, and Nos. 3-6 are Litchfield, St. Anthony, Greenville and Hillsboro.

    Tournament play for Vandalia will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 8 p.m., against either Litchfield or Hillsboro.

    Vandalia has defeated Litchfield twice this season, and was victorious in one game against the Hiltoppers.

    For other local teams, they will need to pull some upsets to reach their title game.

    The junior high volleyball season is well under way for Vandalia, and the Jr. Lady Vandals have had a good start to the season.

    The teams were busy this past week, with several matches and a home tournament. Results from the action can be found in the prep roundup for Feb. 7.

    Vandalia's next home game is next Thursday.

  • Registration open for YMCA soccer

    Registration has opened for the Family YMCA of Fayette County’s spring soccer league.

    Children who are 4 years old through fifth grade may register, and the registration cost is $25 for members and $50 for non-members. The registration deadline is March 2, and a late fee for $20 will be assessed from March 3-12.

    Children will be broken up into three groups: 4-year-olds-kindergarten; grades 1-2; and grades 3-5. All players must be 4 years old by April 30.

  • Lady Vandals advance to regional...

    TOLEDO — The Lady Vandals defeated Cumberland, 62-45, to advance to the regional semifinals.

    Despite a slow start that saw them lead by just three at halftime, the Lady Vandals used a strong second half to advance to Tuesday's game against top-seeded Teutopolis. That game begins at 6 p.m. at Cumberland High School.

    Senior Amber Bruno scored a career-high 36 points in the game.

  • Two local junior high teams...

    A pair of local junior high boys basketball teams advanced in their respective state tournament over the weekend.

    Mulberry Grove's seventh-graders advanced to the third-place game of the IESA Class 1A state tournament on Saturday by splitting its first two games at state at St. Joseph's Junior High.

    The Jr. Eagles beat Bradley St. Joseph, 31-24, in the first round, getting eight points from Cortland Latham and seven from Javion Wright.

  • For now, Vandalia wrestling...

    MOUNT CARMEL - As it stands, Vandalia's wrestlers won their 19th straight regional championship on Saturday.

    Coach Jason Clay and Robinson's coach had different results than the scorer's table, which gave the Vandals a 179-175.5 victory. Initially, Vandalia's wrestlers believed they had lost by just half a point, and Robinson now has 48 hours to appeal the result.

    If Robinson's coaches do a double-check of the scoring and find a different result, the meet result would be overturned with a successful appeal.

  • Lady Vandals win season finale;...

    Senior Amber Bruno had 29 points, and the Lady Vandals used a 25-point fourth quarter to beat Carlinville, 58-50, on Thursday in a South Central Conference matchup and the regular-season finale.

    Vandalia (10-17, 3-6 SCC) will travel to Cumberland on Monday to begin play in the regional tournament. The Lady Vandals face Cumberland at 7:30 p.m.

    At halftime, Vandalia held a 24-21 edge, but the Lady Cavaliers went ahead by two going to the fourth quarter before the scoring outburst from the Lady Vandals.

  • Eighth-graders fight back from...

    GREENVILLE — The Jr. Vandals faced a 14-point deficit with 5:05 remaining Thursday's regional championship game, and though they cut that lead down to four points exactly four minutes later, there wasn't enough time to get the win.

    Roxana used a balanced effort on offense and defense, and took advantage of some Vandalia mistakes to take a 42-37 win in the Class 3A regional finals at Greenville Junior High.

    The tournament sechedule is expected to be announced this afternoon by the Illinois High School Association.

    At the St. Elmo Regional, the Eagles have earned the No. 4 seed behind Nokomis, Altamont and Cowden-Herrick. Other teams there are Beecher City, Brownstown and Ramsey.
