  • Vandals top Patoka in...

    After splitting a pair of nonconference games in the past week, the Vandals will get back into South Central Conference play next Tuesday.

    Vandalia travels to Pana that night for a rematch of the Vandalia Holiday Tournament championship game, which the Panthers won, 56-44.

    Prior to that, the Vandals will host Litchfield in a nonconference game on Friday night.

    Vandalia won the conference game at Litchfield, 48-34, on Dec. 14.


    On Tuesday, the Vandals couldn't control Taylorville's hot shooting in a 76-52 loss.

  • Lady Vandals fall to Greenville...

    The Lady Vandals will celebrate their four seniors on Thursday prior to the game against Roxana.

    Morgan Whightsil, Amber Bruno, Haley Cothern and Abby Dugan will all be recognized prior to the South Central Conference contest.

    Coach Michelle McNary said that last season’s game at Roxana is one the team should have won, so she believes that if her team plays well, it can snap its five-game losing streak.

    Roxana is 13-10 (2-5 SCC) this season.


  • Hablewitz leads Cougars to upset...

    ALTAMONT – Senior Rudy Hablewitz erupted for a career-high 26 points as South Central produced its second-best offensive output of the season in the first round of the 78th annual National Trail Confernce Tournament.

    Hablewitz got better as the game went on, scoring 11 of his points in the fourth quarter of Monday’s 60-47 win against Brownstown at Altamont High School.

  • Vandalia seventh-graders reach...

    The Vandalia seventh-grade boys basketball team is headed to Thursday’s regional championship game.

    Beating Staunton, 32-14, on Tuesday placed the Jr. Vandals in the title game, which will be played at Hillsboro Junior High on Thursday at 6 p.m.

    Vandalia will meet Greenville, which won both regular-season matchups.

    Nathan Casey paced the Jr. Vandals with nine points, and Marcus Zimmerman added seven.

    James Taylor (6), Garrett McNary (5), Ethan Bayles (4) and Nic Wollerman (2) also scored for Vandalia (15-8).

  • Jr. Vandals to play for third in...

    VANDALIA – The Jr. Vandals will play for third place in their own eighth-grade tournament.

    Vandalia was knocked off by St. Elmo on Tuesday in the championship semifinals of the 26th annual event. The third-place game is on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Vandalia Junior High, with the championship game to follow.

    St. Elmo will meet Pana in that game, after Pana beat Central A&M on Tuesday.

    Pana won the event in 2010 and 2012, but St. Elmo hasn't captured a championship since 2004.

  • Aces upset St. Elmo

    Two players had season-highs in scoring, and the Aces fended off a late rally to upset St. Elmo last Friday in Egyptian-Illini Conference action.

    Sophomore Damian Latham had a career-high 23 points, and junior Devonta Williamson had a season-high 16 in the 57-56 victory at Mulberry Grove High School.

    The Aces led throughout much of the first three quarters, taking a nine-point lead into the final period, but St. Elmo would score 20 points in the final eight minutes cut down the lead.

    Eagles fall in first round
    of NTC Tournament
    St. Elmo was defeated by Cowden-Herrick for the second time this season on Tuesday in the first round of the National Trail Conference Tournament.
    The Eagles lost, 56-46.
    Junior Levi Maxey led in scoring with 16 points, and senior Connor Beasley added 14.
    The No. 5 Eagles (10-9) will play No. 8 Neoga in the consolation bracket on Thursday at 6:15 p.m.

  • Brownstown cook-out is on Feb. 1

    The Brownstown Sports Boosters are holding a winter cook-out next Friday.

    The event will begin at 5 p.m. prior to the boys basketball game against St. Elmo.

    A ribeye sandwich meal will  be $6, a pork burger sandwich meal will be $5 and a hot dog meal will be $2.

    A meal includes chips, drink and a homemade dessert.

    Sandwichs may be purchased separately.
