  • Four Vandal Gridders Going On To...

    Four members of the record-setting Vandalia Community High School 2017 football squad signed letters of intent to continue playing football.

    Marcus Zimmerman signed to play at McKendree College in Lebanon, Ethan Bayles signed to play at Upper Iowa in Fayette, Iowa, and Chandler Boyd and Dylan Garrett signed with Eureka College in Eureka. They were members of the first VCHS fooatball team to advance to the third round of the state playoffs, defeating Fairfield and rival Greenville in the first two rounds.

    In junior high volleyball action on Tuesday, Vandalia Junior High School’s seventh-graders lost to Pana, 10-25, 10-25. Their record is now 5-8.
    The eighth-graders defeated Pana in three games, 25-23, 19-25, 25-16. They improved to 13-3 on the season.
    On Monday, the VJHS seventh-graders lost to Trimpe, 17-25, 14-25.
    The eighth-graders won, 25-20, 26-24.
    Last Thursday, the VJHS seventh-graders lost to Hillsboro, 11-25, 21-25.
    The eighth-graders defeated Hillsboro, 25-23, 25-8.

  • Vandals pick up two more wins

    Garett McNary scored 24 points on eight three-pointers and four players scored in double figures as Vandalia defeated Roxana, 78-62, on Tuesday in the Vandals’ final road game of the season.
    The Vandals were behind 24-22 after one quarter and 41-39 at halftime, but outscored Roxana 21-13 in the third quarter to go up 60-54.
    McNary hit three three-pointers in the final quarter as the Vandals outscored the Shells 18-8 to secure the win.

  • SEB edges Odin, SC slips by MG

    Leading by three points heading into the fourth quarter, St. Elmo/Brownstown held on to edge Odin, 55-54, on Tuesday at Odin.
    Odin led 12-8 after one quarter, but the Eagles held a 15-8 edge in the second quarter to lead 23-20 at halftime.
    Both teams scored 13 points in the third quarter, and Odin scored 21 points to St. Elmo/Brownstown’s 19 in the final quarter.
    Lewis Brown scored 17 points and Isaac Maxey 16 to lead the Eagles.

  • Team sectional Tuesday at Benton

    The Vandalia Vandals will attempt to make a return trip to the dual team state finals next Tuesday at the Benton Sectional.
    The Vandals will compete against Murphysboro in a match that begins at 6 p.m.
    The winner of that sectional matchup will advance to the dual team state finals next Saturday in Bloomington.
    The winner of the Benton Sectional will face the winner of the Elmhurst Sectional, either Lansing (Illiana Christian) or Elmhurst (IC Catholic) at 9 a.m. next Saturday at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington.

    Six Vandalia wrestlers have advanced to the IHSA Individual State Tournament later this week, and the Vandal wrestlers will face a known opponent next Tuesday in their bid for a return trip to the state’s dual team finals.

    Three players scored in double figures and the Lady Vandalia held off a barrage of three-pointers in the fourth quarter to avenge a loss to Flora earlier this season.
