  • Lady Vandals beat EAWR, then lose two

The Lady Vandals won another conference game last Friday, but they lost non-conference games to Pinckneyville on Saturday and to Christ Our Rock Lutheran on Monday at the Sandoval Tournament.

Vandalia defeated East Alton-Wood River, 52-39, on Friday, giving it a 4-3 record in the South Central Conference.

The Lady Vandals (5-7) trailed 25-19 at halftime, but outscored the Lady Oilers 33-14 in the second half to claim the victory.

  • Wrestlers finish 11th at Princeton

The Vandalia High School wrestling team finished 11th at the Princeton Invitational on Saturday.

Newman won the invitational with 168.5 points. The Vandals scored 107 points, which was just 1.5 points away from ninth place.

Junior Levi Ulmer was the Vandals’ top individual, taking second place in the 189-pound weight class. He lost to Wilmington's Steve Liaromatis for the championship.

Seniors Justin Hill (125) and John Vosholler (140) each finished third, and junior Daniel Edwards (152) took fifth.

  • Vandal wrestlers go 3-0 at home quad

Freshman C.J. Runkel gave Vandalia wrestling fans a glimpse of what the program’s future may entail during a dual meet against Belleville East last Wednesday.

Runkel, wrestling at 140 pounds, trailed Ayiri Ekwejunor, a Lancers junior, by two points with fewer than 10 seconds left in the third round.

Sparring from neutral position, Runkel took a shot at Ekwejunor and took him down with just six seconds remaining in the period to force overtime.

  • Vandal boys defeat Pinckneyville and Carlinville

A strong, 32-minute effort allowed Vandalia to lead wire-to-wire during a 44-40 win against Pinckneyville on Saturday.

The only blemish was a tie at 38 for 1:15 late in the third quarter.

“We gave a very good effort,” said coach Kevin Jackson. “We guarded very well and rebounded well. They got nobody in double figures.”

The Vandals, meanwhile, had three players score in double figures, with Marty Johnson’s 12 points leading the way, while Dathan Berning and Leyton Godoyo each added 10.

  • Senior spotlight: Justin Hill

In his past 17 matches, Vandalia senior Justin Hill has pinned 11 of his opponents.

That’s expected from any senior who aspires to represent his team at the individual state meet in February.

But the way the 125-pounder has pinned most those opponents was not exactly expected.

At the St. Thomas More Challenge on Dec. 29 and 30, Hill successfully pinned five opponents in 41 seconds or less:
