  • Senior Spotlight: Brandon Budds

MULBERRY GROVE – There’s a stark contrast between Brandon Budds the ballplayer and the Brandon Budds that rides the bus to and from games.

The Patoka senior is one of the leading players and jokesters on the teams, slinging Will Ferrell one-liners on the way to games, but slinging words of advice inside the fences.

“Usually our funniness stays on the bus,” he said. “We’ll joke on the ride here, but once we are on the field, there‘s no more joking.”

  • Murrell's gem leads to SCC win for VHS

Senior Ian Murrell remained perfect after tossing a complete-game, two-hit shutout against Pana last Friday.

The win, which also included 13 strikeouts, was his fifth of the season.

“We got what we needed from our pitcher today,” said coach Luke Hohlt. “He was ahead of all the hitters, changed speeds well and had a lot of confidence.”

Just three batters got three balls in the count, and only two of them got ahead with a 2-1 count. Among them, only one got a hit.

  • Vandals drop doubleheader to Okawville

Vandalia squandered opportunities to win both games of a doubleheader against Okawville on Saturday, leaving the team at what may become an early-season crossroads.

After starting 6-3, the two losses came from a team that has struggled for many years, and if the Vandals don’t learn from their mistakes, the season could go in the wrong direction.

“We will come away from this day learning some things,” said coach Luke Hohlt. “We’ll have to be tough mentally.

  • Vandal notes: Godoyo shows bounce-back ability

A day after striking out four times, Vandalia junior Leyton Godoyo put the struggles behind him and had six quality at-bats during a doubleheader against Okawville.

The Vandals lost both of those games on Saturday, but Godoyo getting himself straightened out was definitely a bright spot.

“He had a rough day yesterday, but he rebounded well for us today,” said coach Luke Hohlt. “Once he bunted for a hit, you knew he would have a nice day.”
