  • All teams 1-1 at Mulberry Grove Invite

    Mulberry Grove, Greenville and Mater Dei each finished 1-1 at the Mulberry Grove softball invitational on Saturday.

    The Lady Aces defeated Mater Dei, 11-5, and fell to Greenville, 10-9, in nine innings.

    Mater Dei also beat Greenville at the event.

    Against Mater Dei, the Lady Aces relied heavily on home runs, hitting two.

    Kate Jolliff lifted a grand slam in the third inning, and Sam Goodin hit a three-run homer in the fourth.
    All 11 runs were scored in those two innings.

  • Area softball schedule changes

    There have been softball schedule changes for Monday and Tuesday.

    On Monday, St. Elmo will now travel to Greenville for a 4:15 p.m. game.

    On Tuesday, Vandalia will play at St. Elmo in a JV game at 4:15 p.m.

  • Friday's Vandalia baseball and softball games rescheduled

    The Vandalia baseball and softball teams were set to open the South Central Conference season on Friday, but the fields will not be ready for the games, which have been rescheduled.

    Both games against Carlinville have been rescheduled for April 30 at 5 p.m.

    Vandalia and St. Elmo softball games for Thursday have been canceled.

    South Central baseball (with Brownstown) and softball games for Thursday have been canceled.

    Patoka and St. Elmo baseball games for Thursday has been canceled.

  • Vandals beat county rival on opening day

    VANDALIA – After their first game was canceled due to rain, the Vandals showed last Friday that they were ready to start the season as soon as they took the field.

    “I’m not kidding – and this will sound silly – but that was the best round of infield and outfield we have ever taken before a game,” said coach Luke Hohlt. “It was flawless, and our guys were chattering and keeping each other pumped up.

  • Vandals Insider: Inexperience shows

    VANDALIA – Despite getting a win last Friday in the season-opener, the Vandals showed their inexperience in the 16-11 victory against Ramsey.

    With just a handful of players with significant playing time at the varsity level, Vandalia coach Luke Hohlt knew coming into the year that there would be come learning curves for his squad.

    “Some decisions, we will have to learn through,” Hohlt said. “The guys will make some bad decisions, but they will have to learn from them, instead of trying fix them immediately.

  • Mother Nature disrupting area's sports teams

    After rain and cold temperatures canceled 33 of the first 40 games for area teams, the snow storm that blasted the area is going to postpone games for at least the next several days.

    Nearly a foot of snow blanketed Fayette County on Sunday, leaving area baseball, softball and track teams again practicing in unnatural surroundings.

    Many games were played last Friday and Saturday before the storm, but through last Thursday, just seven games had been played, including none for South Central, Patoka or Brownstown.

  • Lady Vandals drop home-opener, 6-0

    VANDALIA – Senior Paige Ehrat continued her torrid start at the plate, but the Lady Vandals were overmatched by an out-of-state opponent in last Friday’s home-opener.

    Ehrat was 2-for-3 with two doubles, but Vandalia wasn’t able to get a run across in a 6-0 loss to Plymouth, Wisc., a team that made a stop here during its spring trip.

    Through three games, Ehrat is hitting .625 with three extra-base hits for the Lady Vandals (0-3).

    Vandalia sophomore Ben Strobel finished 11th in the 1,600-meter run at Saturday's Class 1A Illinois Prep Top Times meet in Bloomington.

    Held in the Shirk Fieldhouse on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University, Strobel finished the race in 4:47.67 to place four positions higher than he was seeded.

    The Top Times meet is known as the unofficial indoor state championship meet.
