  • Junior Olympian Champion
    Kassidy VanUytven recently competed in the AAU Junior Olympic Games in New Orleans, earning a gold medal in tumbling. Kassidy is a member of the Triple AAA tumbing team of Vandalia. She is the daughter of Keith and Kayla VanUytven of Vandalia, and the granddaughter of Mark Lorton of Vandalia; and Cindy and Huck Scribner, and Dan and Patti VanUytven of Ramsey. She is the great-granddaughter of Faye Lorton of Ramsey; Brad Lorton of Cowden; and Donna and the late John VanUytven of Occonee.

    A charity golf tournament and luncheon recently raised more than $10,000 for SAFE.

    Tuesday, Aug. 2 Game 1 Ugly Koyote 4 Montgomery Plumbing 2 •Brad Portz tripled for Ugly Koyote, and Cole Rhodes doubled for Montgomery. Game 2 Ugly Koyote 14 Montgomery 7 •For Ugly Koyote, Luke Murfin tripled, and Cody Goldsboro and Jon Spicer doubled.   • Players with local connections play in tourney
    The Illinois Amateur Softball Association held a state wooden bat tournament at the Vandalia Freight field this past weekend. Several local players and some former Vandalia Freight players participated in the fast-pitch tourney.
  • Early-life lessons molded new YMCA program director
    Reflecting back on the reasons why she has worked so hard to find jobs that she loved and where she could also be influential, Amber Daulbaugh pin-pointed a pair of life lessons she learned when she was young. “Whenever I was competing or playing (sports), he was there,” Daulbaugh said of her late father, William. “But he would always be critical, ‘Well, you did good, but you could have done this, too.’
  • Well says ASA wooden bat tourney a success
    Sixth-seeded Teutopolis Wessel’s on Sunday won the country’s inaugural Amateur Softball Association wooden bat state fast-pitch softball tournament at the Freight Field in Vandalia. Wessel’s lost to the Belleville Stallions in the championship game, 11-2, but because that was Wessel’s first loss, the teams met again, with T-Town coming out on top, 9-1. Getting to that title game was somewhat of a chore, however.

Game 2 K-Moe’s 4 Montgomery 1 •Schnarre turned a triple play, and Keri Wilkinson, Nick Simmons and Drew Jones had extra-base hits for K-Moe’s.     YMCA to host sand volleyball tourney The Fayette County Family YMCA is hosting a double-elimination sand volleyball tournament on Sept. 24-25. The registration fee is $90 per team. A maximum of eight people high school-age or older can be on a team, but only six individuals will receive a T-shirt. At least two women must on the court at all times. Those younger than 18 will need a parent's signature to play, and all players must sign a waiver. The minimum number of players on the court is four, and the maximum is six.
