  • PHOTOS: Dee Dee Hartz Memorial Run
    The Family YMCA of Fayette County held the Dee Dee Hartz Memorial 5K run on Saturday morning, with all of the proceeds benefitting the DeeDee Hartz Memorial Scholarship.
  • Post 95's season ends in division tourney
    After being thrown into the mix against the toughest Jr. Legion teams in the region, it wasn’t a huge shock that Vandalia lost both of its games in the division tournament, but an upset win or two wouldn’t have been that surprising either. Granted an automatic berth to the tournament because it was hosted in Vandalia, Post 95 had trouble finding an offensive rhythm, falling to Belleville, 11-1, on Saturday and to Altamont, 8-3, on Sunday.
  • The Freight takes 3rd in state tourney
    The Freight of Vandalia came out of retirement and showed little rust in placing third at the Illinois Amateur Softball Association wooden bat state fast-pitch softball tournament this past weekend. Vandalia opened the tournament, which was held in Casey, last Friday night, with a loss to eventual runners-up, the Belleville Stallions. But from there, the Freight went on a streak none of them likely imagined. In the first game on Saturday morning, Vandalia beat Altamont, advancing to a game at 3 p.m.
  • Registration open for fall sports at the YMCA
    The Family YMCA of Fayette County has opened registration for several fall youth sports. Flag football Children in grades 2-4 may sign up for the YMCA's flag football program, with the first games to be played on or after Sept. 13.

    The Vandalia Sr. Legion squad had a memorable season, finishing 18-11 and reaching the first championship game in the double-elimination district tournament. A player-by-player synopsis of the season follows.

    The Vandalia Field of Dreams committee held a pitcher/catcher camp last week.
  • For the veterans
    Two local veterans were honored prior to Vandalia’s opening game in the Sr. Legion district tournament, and the players furthered honored those men throughout the tournament, by playing with a competitive spirit. Dwight Hagy and Floyd Meseke, both World War II veterans, were honored in a short ceremony on Saturday night before Post 95 defeated Salem, 9-6, with players from each team shaking hands with and thanking the veterans before taking the field.
  • Post 95 battles in four district tournament games
    Hard-fought battles against Effingham and Salem in the district tournament brought the Vandalia Sr. Legion season to a close this past weekend, with Post 95 getting eliminated by Effingham on Monday. Post 95 finished the year with an 18-11 record, which included a season-high winning streak of five games and a stretch with nine wins in 11 games from June 13-28. Players from 10 high schools made up the team, and they meshed quickly, making the season both enjoyable and successful.
