  • Brownstown Sports Boosters hosting third annual fish fry on Sept. 14
    The Brownstown Sports Boosters are hosting their third annual fish fry on Sept. 14 at Brownstown Elementary School. The all-you-can eat event will be held from 4:30-7 p.m. The cost is $8.50 for adults, $5.50 for kids 12-and-under and $8.50 for carryout. Food served at the event will include catfish curls, walleye, popcorn shrimp, chicken strips, potato salad, cole slaw, applesauce, baked beans, steak fries, desserts and drinks. Tickets are available from any Bomber athlete, or at the door. A 50/50 raffle will be held during the event.
  • Greenville College hosting softball clinics
    The Greenville College softball coaching staff will soon be hosting five softball camps. On Saturday, Sept. 8, there will be a defense and hitting clinic for ages 8-12, with the defensive session from 9 a.m-noon, and the hitting session from 1-4 p.m. Each session is $35, or $60 for both. An identical camp will be offered on Saturday, Sept. 15, but for ages 13-18. On Saturday, Sept. 22, a pitching clinic will be held for all ages from 9 a.m.-noon. The cost is $35.
  • Buckstop wins slo-pitch tourney championship
    Justin Atwood and Jordan Harmon were named tournament co-MVPs as Buckstop Archery won the Vandalia men's slo-pitch double-elimination tournament. In the title game, Buckstop defeated Keck's Marsh, 19-2, with Jordan Harmon hitting a grand slam, and Justin Atwood, Josh Atwood and Tyler Pilcher each doubling. Harmon was 8-for-8 in two games of the tournament. The tournament all-star team follows:
  • Atwood is MVP of men's slo-pitch league
    The Vandalia men’s slo-pitch softball league will be holding the finals of its annual double-elimination league championship tournament on Thursday, starting at 6:30 p.m. Seeding for that tournament, which started on Monday, was determined in a single-elimination tournament that was held last Thursday, and Buckstop Archery, the regular-season champs, earned the No. 1 seed. One day before, the league handed out individual awards, with Justin Atwood bringing home most valuable player honors. Other award winners included:
  • Riedle Law Office wins St. Paul basketball league
    The St. Paul summer basketball league recently held its championship tournament, with Riedle Law Office winning the title. Riedle won the best-of-three championship series against the Pink Panthers, winning game one, 49-45, and game two, 58-52. The tournament started with play-in games for seeds 3-6. Joe’s Pizza defeated the Opfer Clan, and China Gate defeated Team Bushue. China Gate went on to defeat Joe’s Pizza, 68-46, while the Opfer Clan beat Team Bushue.

    The St. Elmo Tourism Committee held its first annual kickball tournament in Deken Park on Saturday morning, with three teams competing.

    Vandalia resident Kassidy VanUytven, 8, recently won a gold medal in tumbling at the AAU Jr. Olympics in Houston, Texas. She is the daughter of Keith and Kayla VanUytven.
  • Leiken wins SIGA player's title
    Rising Vandalia senior RaeChelle Leiken won the player's championship and the points championship on the Southern Illinois Golf Association's Jr. Tour. With a 72, Leiken won the SIGA JGT Vogler Ford-Linoln-Mazda Player's Championship by seven strokes in the 16-18-year-old girls division at Franklin County Country Club on Monday. It was Leiken's 10th victory of the summer in 12 events, giving her a wide margin in the points championship, which she won, 160.25-139.
  • PHOTOS: Cardinals Motorcycle Powers Through Town
    Hobi Timmons of Germantown and his award-winning customized St. Louis Cardinals Harley Davidson motorcycle made a stop in Vandalia last Thursday, when Timmons was visiting the Krueger family. Timmons' motorcycle has twice been driven on the field at Busch Stadium and has placed in motorcycle shows in several states. The bike includes hand-painted details, such as a photo of Busch Stadium and baseball cards of 13 Cardinal legends, and a seat modeled after a baseball glove.
