  • Kaskaskia College

    Step aerobics class
    The Kaskaskia College Office of Continuing/Community Education will offer a step aerobics class at the Fayette County YMCA in Vandalia on Thursdays, May 2-30, from 5-6 p.m.
    The registration number for the class is COED 5410 VA01E.
    This class will be a low-impact cardio workout using an adjustable step bench for a total body workout.
    The cost for this course is $25, but students over 60 may register at no cost.

  • Vandalia kindergarten pre-registration is May 7

    Kindergarten pre-registration for the Vandalia School District will be held from 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. at Jefferson Primary School.
    Pre-registration is for children who are 5 years of age before Sept. 1. Children do not need to be present for pre-registration.
    Parents are to provide: proof of a physical exam within the past year; immunization records; certified birth certificate; verification of chicken pox or vaccine; diabetes check; and proof of dental and vision exams within the past year.

  • Response agencies hold mock disaster drill at BHS

    The Brownstown Volunteer Fire Department teamed up with other area emergency response agencies to present a mock disaster drill last Wednesday afternoon at Brownstown High School to demonstrate to students the seriousness of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

    20 Years Ago

    1993 – The Fayette County Board approved a six-month contract for Emergency Services & Disaster Agency Coordinator John Adermann, despite objections that Adermann voiced about the new pact. Adermann opposed the stipulation that the ESDA vehicle be kept at the county jail and used for business purposes only. The new contract also included a 11-point list of guidelines, one of which stipulated that all ESDA volunteers had to be screened and approved by the board’s ESDA committee.

  • Keep service in 'postal service'

    Though the battle probably is not over, the people of the United States were the winners when last Wednesday the U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors announced that six-day mail delivery will continue. At least for the time being.
    The decision came after months of rumors that the postal service had targeted Saturday delivery as a way to cut costs. The proposal had been vigorously opposed by newspapers and other business-related organizations, which feared that five-day delivery would disrupt the distribution of time-sensitive newspapers and business mailings.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log

    • Leroy W. Ishum, 44, RR 2, Brownstown, was arrested on April 16 on a small claims warrant. Bond was $223 cash.
    • Jory A. Moore, 24, East St. Louis, was arrested on April 15 on charges of driving with a suspended license and speeding. Bond was $1,500.
    • Bambi N. Buie, 24, 2322 W. St. Clair St., Vandalia, was arrested on April 15 on charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of more than 2.5 grams of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bond was $7,500.

    Band Boosters accepting items for sale

    The Vandalia Band Boosters are asking for items to be donated for a rummage sale it will hold on Saturday, April 20, at the Vandalia Moose Lodge.
    Items can be dropped off at the Moose Lodge from noon-7 p.m. on Thursday or from noon-5 p.m. on Friday.
    The band is facing large budget cuts, and all proceeds from the sale will benefit the band. For more information, or for help with large items, contact Champion Trophies & T's at 283-7062 or NAPA Auto Parts at 283-3053.
