  • Enlow is Jr. All-American

Vandalia resident Anthony Enlow earned All-American Copper status after going 6-3 for Illinois Team United at the national AAU Elementary Duals in Kingsport, Tenn. Illinois Team United placed fifth, going 7-2.

  • Lady Rams win own invitational on tie-breaker criteria

The Lady Rams went 2-1 to win their own invitational on Saturday.

Ramsey opened with a 5-2 win against Arthur-Lovington, and that proved to be the difference-maker, as the teams each finished the event at 2-1 and the game was used as the tie-breaker.

Senior Shaunna Rainey had two triples in the game and drove home two runs, and freshman Megan Kimberlin hit her first home run in the fourth inning.

Taylor Knisley, a senior, pitched seven strong innings to earn the win.

  • Lady Eagles beat Ramsey in EIC action

ST. ELMO – Prior to a delay for lightning seen in the distance, it looked like Ramsey was going to get into the win column in Egyptian-Illini Conference play.

But something about that 30-minute delay last Wednesday must have motivated St. Elmo’s players, because the Lady Eagles scored 10 times in the final four innings to earn the 12-6 victory.

St. Elmo had plenty of base runners prior to the delay, but had managed just two runs, and the game’s feel suggested that Ramsey was in line to break its losing streak.

  • Hawkins pitching well for SIUE club team

Vandalia graduate Kyle Hawkins has been a very effective pitcher for the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville club baseball team this spring.

In his last four games, he has pitched 18 1/3 innings, striking out 28 batters.

Included in those starts were a complete game in a 7-1 win against SIU-Carbondale on Sunday, and a four-hitter against St. Louis University last Tuesday.

Against SIUC, Hawkins struck out eight, walked one and allowed just five hits to keep SIUE undefeated in conference play, at 8-0.
