  • The Way We Were

1993 – Paul Zeman, president of the Vandalia Chamber of Commerce, announced that he had formed a 21-member committee to study the possibility of annexing land between Vandalia’s city limits and Vandalia Lake into the city.

  • The Donaldsons' latch key was always out

“They were a hardy set of people, honest and upright in all their dealings, social and kind, the latch string always on the outside.” That was how Presley Garner Donaldson described the early settlers of Northern Fayette County who commenced coming about 1825.
Around 1910, there was a popular movement for people to publish their memoirs.  Fayette County is fortunate that Presley G. Donaldson told the story of his life in a book titled, "Life and Adventures of P.G. Donaldson," printed at Cowden’s  Jewett Printery in 1908.

  • Band concert raises $11,395, teaches lesson

Though Tuesday’s band concert at Vandalia Community High School was tabbed “A Night of Music,” there was a lot more going on than 240 young musicians playing notes on a score.
Instead, those students were banding together to settle a score with the forces that threaten to diminish their band program. They were playing to save the job of their director, Tony Hicks, whose position has been eliminated by the school board unless alternative funding can be raised.

  • Weathering the Storm

Humans weren't the only ones impacted by Sunday's unusual snowstorm.

Wildlife also had to endure the 10-12 inches of heavy, wet snow that fell in the Fayette County area. Shown above is a male cardinal. In the picture below, a pair of mourning doves puff up their feathers and hunker down as the snow falls around them. Temperatures are predicted to be in the 50s by the weekend, so the late-season snow won't last long.
