  • Duels were used to settle personal issues

As far as my research shows, there has never been a duel fought in Vandalia. There have been a couple of hangings, whippings meted out by the local sheriff, according to law, a few murders and a tarring and feathering or two, but no duels.
Duels were an accepted way for gentlemen of honor to settle “difficulties” of a personal character in the early days of Illinois.

  • Sharing the road with ag vehicles not an easy task

Usually, we run editorials about safely sharing the roads with farm equipment in April. We do it then because in most years, that’s when our farmers are most active traveling to and from fields during the planting season.
    Not this year.
This spring’s persistent rains have produced soggy fields that – until recently – made it impossible for farmers to get into the fields. Thus, the planting season didn’t even get under way until well into May. And it’s not done yet.

  • City puts garbage law on the books

The city of Vandalia has charged all residents for trash pickup in the past, but didn’t have specific wording on that issue in its ordinance book. It does now.
The council approved on Monday an ordinance amendment that states that it’s “in the best interest of the public health … that the use of garbage collection … be made mandatory.”
It further states that “all occupied residences shall pay the charges for residential waste collection.”
