  • The Next Level: Graduated athlete roundup (July 4)

    Many athletes who spent their high school years in Fayette County have moved on to play for college or professional teams. Below are the athletes who recently made headlines.

    Spencer Patton • Pitcher • Wilmington Blue Rocks

    •June 27 – Patton, a South Central graduate, picked up his second save of the season in a 4-1 win at Lynchburg. The Kansas City Royals prospect struck out one in pitching a perfect ninth inning  for the Class A Advanced Blue Rocks.

  • National dirt track racing series coming to Brownstown

    A national dirt racing tour will make a stop at Fayette County Speedway this Friday night.

    The DIRTcar Summer Nationals Hell Tour returns to Brownstown at 7 p.m., and racers in the DIRTcar Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals will be also be racing.

    For local racers, all races will be worth double points.

    The gates to the speedway will open at 3 p.m., and ticket prices are:

    •Pit passes: $35
    •Ages 13 and up: $25
    •Ages 8-12: $10
    •Ages 7 and under: free

    East-Central Illinois Liberty, a traveling team coached by Vandalia's Rich Well and Nick Casey, defeated the Vandalia Jr. Legion squad, 14-3, last Tuesday at Vandalia Mutual Field.

  • Police investigate second robbery

    For the second time in about seven weeks, a Vandalia convenience store has been robbed at gunpoint.
    Vandalia Police Chief Jeff Ray said that city officers were called to the Circle K station at 127 W. Gallatin St. at about 3 a.m. on Saturday for a report of an armed robbery.
    According to Ray, a male entered the store and displayed a handgun to a Circle K employee and demanded money. The suspect took an undisclosed amount of cash.

  • City OKs TIF for South Central FS

    The Vandalia City Council approved on Monday a Tax Increment Financing agreement with South Central FS for the cooperative’s new facility near the city western Interstate 70 interchange.
    It also began working on the extension of water and sewer lines to that area that would both serve the new FS facility and aid in the future development of that area.

  • City working with rail line buyers

    The city of Vandalia took the first step on Monday to working with a local resident to revive the local rail line as a way of boosting local economic development efforts.

  • Sr. Legion Firecracker Classic canceled

    Vandalia's Sr. Legion team was scheduled to play in the Mattoon Firecracker Classic this weekend, but rains in that area plus delays in the Jr. Legion half of that tournament has forced the Sr. Legion portion of the event to be canceled.

    Post 95 will still be in action, however, traveling to Bluford for a doubleheader on Thursday at 4 p.m., hosting St. Anthony in a nine-inning game on Friday at 6 p.m. and traveling to Lincoln on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
