    This week’s Mystery Banks Photo: This determined-looking young man, pictured about 70  years ago, grew up in Fayette County and attained a position in which he influenced others as a leader of a large organization.

  • Discovery of sidewalk vaults causes stir

    There was a buzz of excitement in downtown Vandalia a couple of weeks ago when workers engaged on the streetscape project in the 100 block of South Fourth Street broke through the sidewalk slab in front of the Copper Penny into what appeared to be a tunnel.

  • Congratulations to graduates

    During the next few days, the strains of “Pomp and Circumstance” will drift out of gymnasiums throughout the area.
    Graduates will don robes and turn tassels. Speakers will affirm and exhort. And parents will offer sighs of relief and shed tears of joy.
    It’s graduation time in Fayette County. It’s a time of endings and beginnings. It’s a time when students are making plans for their futures – whether that be in college, the military or the working world.

  • Area graduations are this weekend

    Commencement exercises will be held this weekend at all seven area high schools.
    The schedule is as follows:

    •Vandalia Community High School-7 p.m.

  • Improvements in Patoka

    Makaylee Splechter and other members of Patoka Brownie Troop 8855 were busy doing landscaping at the building that will soon host the community's food pantry, Contagious Faith Ministry.

  • Handrails Added on Gallatin

    After receiving reports of people inadvertently stepping off of the raised sidewalk areas in front of some businesses on Gallatin Street, the city of Vandalia decided to install handrails at those locations.

    The handrails were installed last week, including this one in front of NOISE Music and Sound.

  • Vandalia Pool opens May 31

    The Vandalia Public Swimming Pool will open on Friday, May 31
    The pool hours will be: Sunday-Friday, 1-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.; and Saturdays, 1-5 p.m. only. Private Parties are held from 6-8 p.m.
    Wednesday mornings, from June 12-Aug. 7, are free from 9-11 a.m.
    Admission is $4.00 for everyone over the age of 4; those 4 and under are free.
    Those who pay to swim from 1-5 p.m. may swim for free from 6-8 p.m. by getting their hand stamped before they leave in the afternoon.

    VCHS class of '93 planning reunion

    The Vandalia Community High School class of 1993 is holding its 20-year reunion on Saturday, June 29, at the Vandalia Country and Golf Club.
    It will include a golf scramble from 8 a.m.-noon, family swimming from noon-3 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m.
    Organizers have tried to contact fellow classmates by email or on Facebook. Those who graduated in 1993 and have not received an evite may contact Julie Withers at 283-8727 for details.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log

    • Brandy L. Lape, 33, 617 N. First St., Vandalia, was arrested on May 13 on charges of possession of anhydrous ammonia with the intent to manufacture methamphetamine and intimidation of a witness. Bond was $25,000.
    • Steven F. Stokes, 29, 119 S. Fourth St., Vandalia, was arrested on May 13 on a charge of possession of anhydrous ammonia with the intent to manufacture methamphetamine. Bond was $25,000.
