  • Evans Library offering summer reading program

    Evans Public Library and McDonald’s are inviting local youth to sign up for the library’s summer reading program, “Have Book Will Travel.”
    “Have Book Will Travel” offers two reading programs this summer – one for students going into kindergarten through sixth grade; and one for students in junior high through newly graduated high school seniors.
    Prizes will be awarded for reading throughout the summer, and special programs will be offered at 10 a.m. every Tuesday in June at the library.

  • Walk Across America

    The 11th annual Walk Across America was held on Monday afternoon, with participants walking from the Vandalia Statehouse to the American Legion Home.

    The walk, a way to show support for local troops, is sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie and Auxiliary 3901, Helm DUI Services and Brownstown VFW Post 9770.

    1998 – St. Elmo native Bruce Williams, a 1979 graduate of St. Elmo High School, was killed in a U.S. Navy helicopter crash.
    Vandalia Community High School wrestler Ty Kidd placed third in the 160-pound class at the state-wrestling tournament.
    Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hoffman of Bingham were celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary.
    Emil Graumenz, a long-time resident of the St. Peter area, was celebrating his 90th birthday.

    Over the years, I have had the pleasure to work on many family projects, but I think the one that touched me the most was that of Wesley and Anna Catherine Rush.

  • Opportunities lost by IHSA decisions

    There’s something about unrealized potential that prompts a strong emotional reaction.
    When it’s caused by a lack of effort or discipline, it makes us mad. When it’s caused by seemingly random circumstances, it makes us sad.
    But when it’s caused by ill-conceived and apparently cold-hearted decisions by those in authority, it makes us furious.
    Such was a decision made by Illinois High School Association officials at Saturday’s soggy state track meet.

    The Vandalia boys track season ended with a tough break at Saturday’s state finals.

    Coming into the 110-meter hurdle finals as the No. 4 seed, senior Ryan Ambuehl did not make it to the check-in tent in time to run in the finals, even though he reported before the race actually began.
