  • Mabrys continue working toward restaurant opening

    A couple planning to open a restaurant on Vandalia Lake say that the city council’s vote on enforcing its zoning ordinance does not stop them from proceeding with their plans.
    “We keep going,” Steve “Luke” Mabry said last Wednesday afternoon.
    Mabry and his wife, Latisha, are finalizing work on the conversion of a house into a restaurant called The Lake House, located on Ill. Route 185 at the Vandalia Lake bridge.

  • Second liquor license vote a tie

    A tie vote meant that for the second time in three months, the Fayette County Board declined to grant a liquor license to a couple planning to open a restaurant on Vandalia Lake.
    After a lengthy discussion on Tuesday evening, the board voted 7-7 on the license application filed by Steve “Luke” and Latisha Mabry.

    Bonnie Hill benefit is Saturday

    A benefit for Bonnie Hill , who is battling breast cancer, will be held from 4-10 p.m. on Saturday at the Vandalia Moose Lodge. It will include food, a 50/50 drawing, raffle, music and an auction. For more information, call 918-9988.

    VCHS class of '93 planning reunion

    The Vandalia Community High School class of 1993 is holding its 20-year reunion on Saturday, June 29, at the Vandalia Country and Golf Club.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log

    • Alberto V. Vela Jr., 36, 1028 W. St. Louis Ave., Vandalia, turned himself in on June 11 for failure to appear in court on a charge of deceptive practices. Bond was $2,500.
    • Robert M. Tater, 53, San Diego, Calif., was arrested on June 10 for failure to appear in court in Putnam County on a charge of driving while disqualified. Bond was $1,000.
    • Christine E. Carter, 24, 1429 W. Main St., Vandalia, was arrested on June 10 on a Bond County warrant for a charge of deceptive practices. Bond was $5,000.

  • Police warn of scams

    The Vandalia Police Department is reminding residents of Vandalia and surrounding areas of scams currently being conducted.
    According to the VPD, local residents have been receiving letters stating that they had won large amounts of money, and that victims then receive fictitious checks in the mail.
    According to police, residents are directed to cash the check and mail the money back in, and are told that they will then receive their prize money or a new vehicle.

  • Coroner releases information on two deaths

    Fayette County Coroner Bruce Bowen reported two deaths in Fayette County late last week.
    Bowen said that late Thursday evening, Tommy Collier, 60, of Odin, was found dead in a corn crib near Shobonier.
    The coroner said that Collier was on a farm grinding corn for cattle at the time of his death.
    He said that Collier’s wife contacted the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office after being unable to locate her husband. A sheriff’s deputy found Collier in the corn crib.
    Bowen pronounced Collier dead at the scene at 12:27 a.m. on Friday.

  • Second shootout begins on Thursday

    Starting on Thursday, three area teams will be in action at the second Vandal Shootout of the summer.

    Vandalia, St. Elmo/Brownstown and Patoka will all be playing at the various gyms in the Vandalia district on Thursday and Friday, and Vandalia’s JV team will join the  action on Friday.

    Schedules for each of the local teams follow.
