  • Two men sentenced to 4 years in prison

    A Vandalia man whose recent search by authorities included the use of social media last week was sentenced to four years in prison.

  • Fatal wreck trial rescheduled

    A bench trial scheduled next week for a Missouri man charged with causing the death of a Canada man in an hit-and-run accident last June has been delayed.
    The trial for Ray L. Ryan, 60, was set for next Wednesday, but was rescheduled for March 21 during a pretrial hearing last week in Fayette County Circuit Court.

  • Recycling registered

    While it was announced on Tuesday that the Fayette County Health Department is starting an electronic recycling program, that agency will simply be handling paperwork associated with the current program.
    Fayette County Board Vice Chairman Darrell Schaal, conducting the board’s meeting on Tuesday in the absence of Chairman Jeff Beckman, reported on the electronic program, but said he had no details.

  • Ferguson wins bowling regional

    Madison Ferguson of Vandalia won the IHSA Girls Bowling Regional on Saturday at Collinsville, and she will be joined at the sectional tournament by teammate Aurora Richardson.

    Morgan Dothager (8-5) placed 4th and scored 4.0 team points.

  • No. 4 Vandals to face A-J

    Vandalia’s wrestlers will face Anna-Jonesboro at 6 p.m. next Tuesday in the VCHS gym for a chance to return to the dual team state tournament.
    Vandalia will also host Monticello and Mt. Carmel in the other matchup that evening.
    Vandalia enters the match ranked No. 4 in Class 1A by both Illinois Matmen and Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association.
    The Vandals are the only ranked team at the Vandalia Sectional.

    The following Vandalia wrestlers placed in the top three at the Carlyle Regional and advance to the IHSA Carterville Sectional this Friday and Saturday, with regional champions in bold type:
    • 106 pounds – Jarek Wehrle, first.
    • 120 pounds – Cutter Prater, second.
    • 126 pounds – Matthew Hobler, second.
    • 132 pounds – Ryan Kaiser, third.
    • 138 pounds – Zack Stephenson, second.
    • 145 pounds – Dawson McKinney, second.

  • Regional streak now at 25

    Eleven Vandals placed and all 14 scored points as the Vandalia wrestled team won the school’s 25th consecutive regional title on Saturday in Carlyle.
