    As he took the reins of chamber president late last month, Todd Stapleton expressed a desire to lead that organization’s efforts to be involved in economic development.
    And, in doing so, Stapleton said, “We need to focus on what we are and what we do have, and quit focusing on the negatives.
    “Sometimes we focus on what we don’t have, what we’re lacking. When you’re positive, you’re working together with what you have, and I think that brings out a positive side for anybody who comes through our community.”

    1990 – Lincoln’s life in Vandalia was remembered during a Lincoln’s Birthday program sponsored by the Vandalia Historical Society.
    The Vandalia Optimist Club donated $2,584.06 to the VCHS Lettermen’s Club, the amount representing half of the proceeds made by the club when it hosted the University of Illinois basketball scrimmage.

    National Road birthday party Thursday

    The National Road Association of Illinois Interpretive Center in Vandalia will celebrate its sixth anniversary from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Thursday.
    The celebration will include an address by Linda Hanabarger on the history of the National Road and Vandalia at 11 a.m. and a talk by Kathy Schultz on the Vandalia Memories Facebook page at 3 p.m.

    • John D. Shelton, 32, RR 1, Vandalia, was arrested on Feb. 9 for failure to appear in Clay County court. Bond was $5,000.
    • Michael A. Bubb, 63, RR 2, St. Elmo, was arrested on Feb. 9 on a charge of possession of cannabis. No bond information was listed.
    • Randall L. Buie, 50, 306 E. Cumberland Road, St. Elmo, was arrested on Jan. 9 on a charge of disorderly conduct. Bond was $1,200.
    • Keith R. Myles, 21, Glen Carbon, was arrested on Feb. 8 on a charge of possession of cannabis. Bond was $1,500.
