    The outcome of Friday’s game was never really in doubt, with the Vandals squaring off against a Litchfield squad that is small in numbers and consisting mainly of lower classmen.

    Cyrus Tuttle was born on May 15, 1797, at Brandon, Vt., and died on Dec. 9, 1848, Seminary Township, Fayette County.  He was a son of Capt. Solomon and Deborah Strong Tuttle, and came with his family to Fayette County in 1836, settling in Seminary Township.

  • Vandals show more than just wins

    Going into this Friday's homecoming game against Piasa Southwestern, the Vandalia Vandals varsity football team is touting a perfect 4-0 record. But you have to look beyond those wins to see what kind of players Vandalia has on the roster this fall.
    In one game, the Vandals chose not to respond in kind when some of their players were targeted with inappropriate actions of the other team. They kept a cool head and showed that they were above those actions.

  • Sign theft is a crime

    You can tell by the signs posted throughout the county that an election is coming up. What you don't see are signs that are no longer posted.
    For whatever reason, there are always people who – for some reason or another – think it's OK to steal or destroy candidates' signs.
    It's not – it's a criminal offense.
    Candidates and their supporters put a lot of money into their campaigns, which includes signs that are posted to advertise their run for elected office.

    This week's photo: This young girl, who was born in 1945, attended Maple Grove School and lives in Pittsburg. She has a son and a daughter, and a brother and a sister.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log

    • Lucas W. Frailey, 24, 703 W. Janett Ave., Vandalia, was arrested on Sept. 17 for contempt of court. Bond was $500 cash, and he was transported to Effingham County for failure to appear in court.
    • John R. Feldhake, 59, Shumway, was arrested on Sept. 16 for failure to appear in court. Bond was $275 cash.
    • Ibrahim M. Abukar, 32, Dallas, Texas, was arrested on Sept. 16 on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol. Bond was $3,000.

    ✔ Soroptimist International of Vandalia is inviting all local women and young ladies to its program at noon at Ponderosa Steakhouse. The guest speaker, Marisa Thomason, will talk about her recent mission trip to El Salvador. All guests are welcome to purchase lunch if they wish.   • FCCF's Carnival in the Park is Saturday

    The Fayette County Cancer Fund will once again be holding the Carnival in the Park to help raise funds to assist cancer patients living in Fayette County.
    This year’s event will be held from 4-8 p.m. this Saturday at Rogier Park on Fillmore Street in Vandalia. In the event of rain, the carnival will be held at the Family YMCA of Fayette County on Rock Island Avenue in Vandalia.
