  • Collaborative effort

    What started out as a plan of Vandalia’s new superintendent of schools to inform local organizations about the district’s idea of developing more ways to help local youth and their families has grown into a collaborative effort to make that happen.
    Dr. Jennifer Garrison told school board members on Tuesday that the first community collaboration meeting was held earlier this month, during which three short-term goals were set:
    • Aligning food pantries for the community.

  • City council OKs $3,000 to support new CEO program for HS students

    Vandalia officials said on Monday night that they will support an entrepreneurial program that will provide “real-life learning” for some high school students.
    And to show its support, the city council voted unanimously to give the Fayette County CEO program $1,000 a year for the next three years.
    The Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities program, in its infancy stage in Fayette County, was explained to city officials by Pat Click, Sandy Michel-Stempinski, Todd Stapleton and Sally Emerick.

    A Vandalia man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison on predatory criminal sexual assault charges.

  • 'Sanctuary' county

    Following the lead of a neighboring county, Fayette County is now a “sanctuary” for gun owners.
    The Fayette County Board on Tuesday unanimously approved a resolution stating its opposition to bills before state legislators that would limit the rights of gun owners as stated in the U.S. Constitution.
    None of the board members spoke before voting on the measure, but someone in the audience did.
    “For too long, Chicago has been making gun laws that affect Southern Illinois,” Mike Black said.

    RESOLUTION 2018-05-08-A
    Resolution opposing the passage of HB1465, HB1467, HB1468, HB1469, SB1657, any trailer bill, or any bill similar too, or any bill where the 100th Illinois General Assembly desires to restrict the Individual right of U.S. Citizens as protected by the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution.
    WHEREAS, the Right of the People to Keep and Bear Arms is guaranteed and under the Constitution of the State of Illinois, and;

    ✔ The Fayette County Retired Teachers meet at 10:30 a.m. at Ponderosa Steakhouse in Vandalia. All retired teachers in Fayette County are invited.

    Friday, May 11

    ✔ The Vandalia Chamber of Commerce will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at noon at Farmers Insurance, 2425 Veterans Ave.
    ✔ Bingo is held at Crawford-Hale American Legion Post 95 home. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and bingo begins at 7 p.m.
    ✔ A Nar-Anon meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at Northside Christian Church, 1845 W. Jackson St., Vandalia.
