    The following arrests were taken from the arrest log at the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office. Unless otherwise noted, the amount of bail required for release is 10 percent of the bond amount listed.
    Individuals who are arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

    ✔ The Fayette County Retired Teachers meet at 10:30 a.m. at Ponderosa Steakhouse in Vandalia. All retired teachers in Fayette County are invited.

    Friday, May 11

    ✔ The Vandalia Chamber of Commerce will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at noon at Farmers Insurance, 2425 Veterans Ave.
    ✔ Bingo is held at Crawford-Hale American Legion Post 95 home. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and bingo begins at 7 p.m.
    ✔ A Nar-Anon meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at Northside Christian Church, 1845 W. Jackson St., Vandalia.

  • Becks among the first to come here

    The log cabin pictured with this column stood for generations in the Wright’s Corner neighborhood, sheltering the Beck family from wind and rain.
    It has seen the birthing of babies and been at center stage as the old folks died and their funerals were held from the front room.
    This particular log house was built by Miles R. Beck in about 1875.  Beck, who was born on March 22, 1846, in Fayette County, was the son of Joseph and Lydia Bankson Beck.

  • Cancer fund keeps money local to give aid

    It has been about 2 1/2 years since a group of local residents made the decision to pull away from the American Cancer Society and form their own group to assist people battling cancer. And it appears that their decision was a wise one.
    The Fayette County Cancer Fund was formed in October 2015, with the move made to ensure that donations made by individuals, businesses and organizations were used only to help local cancer patients.

    Pedigo Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
    The instructor, Chad Hawkins, has a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) under Heath Pedigo.
    He is a seven-time IBJJF world champion, five-time IBJJF Masters Pan American champion, 15-time IBJJF Chicago champion, Abu Dhabi Pro trial champion and Shoyoroll-sponsored athlete.
    Hawkins has competed in more than 300 competition matches and has only lost once in his weight class/age group.

    The Family YMCA of Fayette County is offering a youth tennis program designed to provide youth a fun and interactive experience learning the game of tennis.

  • Cougars top WSS, take second at Centralia

    Hunter Brandt went 4-for-4 with four runs batted in to lead South Central to an 8-2 win against Windsor/Stew-Stras on Tuesday at Lions Park in Kinmundy.
    South Central led 1-0 after one inning and tagged on five runs in the fourth inning to seal the win.
    Brandt also got the win for the Cougars, striking out 12 and walking just one in a complete-game performance.
