  • Taylor elected VVFD chief

    Ed Taylor Jr.was elected chief of the Vandalia Volunteer Fire Department at the department's business meeting last Wednesday.

    Taylor, who is in his 32nd year on the department, was promoted from first assistant chief. He joined the department in 1979, and has been first assistant chief since February 1998.

    Taylor succeeds Merle Adermann, who retired last month after 37 years on the department and 19 years as the VVFD chief.

    Crete Carrier Corp. names Berst 'driver of month'
    Vandalia resident, Robert Berst, has been named "driver of the month" at the Crete Carrier Corp. terminal in Indianapolis.
    Berst, who started driving for Crete Carrier 12 years ago, has logged 1.5 million miles. For the award, he received a plaque, and he will compete with other monthly winners for the company's "driver of the year" award.

    1996  – Using a stifling defense and a strong ground game, the Vandalia Vandals defeated Pana, 12-0, to win the Mid-State Conference football crown, the school's first in 20 years.
    Rich Walker, Vandalia's mayor for the past 12 years, announced that he would not seek reelection.
