  • Applications taken for school board seat

    Applications are being accepted through next Tuesday afternoon for an open seat on the Vandalia Board of Education.
    The vacancy has been created by the resignation of Chris Palmer, who was serving as the president of the school board at the time of his resignation, which was effective on Monday.

  • Shop Local Challenge under way

    In making another plea to residents to shop locally, the city of Vandalia and Greater Fayette County Chamber of Commerce is also asking shoppers to help them in their efforts to enhance the local business community.

  • Household waste collection is Saturday

    The Fayette County Health Department is hosting a household waste collection event this Satuday.
    During the event, held from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. in the back parking lot of the health department, residents can take advantage of the free and safe disposal of household waste.
    The collection event is made possible by a grant procured by the health department.
    Items that will be accepted, unloaded by event personnel, include:
    • Fluorescent bulbs
    • Medicine (liquid and pills)
    • Household batteries
    • Aerosol pesticides

  • Seeking a grant

    Over the concerns of several aldermen, the Vandalia City Council approved an ordinance that’s required to make the city eligible to receive grant funds for water line improvements.
    The city plans to apply for $500,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds from the state to help pay for 5,506 linear feet of 6-inch and 10-inch water main replacements.
    Also included in the project are eight fire hydrants, 10 gate valves and other associated appurtances.

    South Central defeated Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City on Monday to improve to 5-16 on the season.
    South Central – Landreth 6 points, 4 aces, 6 kills, stuff, dig; Smith 9 points, ace, 3 kills, 2 assists, 7 digs; Lutz 3 points, ace, 3 kills, 10 assists, 4 digs; Potter 5 points, 2 kills, 6 digs; Kollman 2 points, 3 kills, 5 digs; Magnus point, aces, kill, 3 assists, 2 digs; Hall kill, 2 digs.
    The JV squad lost in two games, 21-25, 17-25. Reynolds had seven points.
    The fresh/soph team won, 25-17, 25-19. Malone had 17 points.

  • Mulberry Grove wins EI Tourney

    Mulberry Grove came from behind, then held off Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City in the final inning to win the Egyptian Illini Conference Tournament at Vandalia Mutual Field last Thursday.

  • Laack, Ruckman all-SCC; Vandals second

    Chase Laack tied for second in the South Central Conference Tournament on Tuesday and teammate Riley Ruckman joined him in earning all-conference honors.

    For the second consecutive week, the bulk of the Vandalia Vandals’ first-stringers played less than a half of football. And, for the second straight time, they recorded some good stats with limited playing time.
