  • Bombers post 14-4 win in regional

    Nate Philpot led the Bombers both offensively and on the mound as Brownstown/St. Elmo advanced to the regional finals with a 14-4 win over Bridgeport Red Hill.
    Philpot tossed a four-hitter, struck out 11 and walked six, and was 3-for-5 with a double, triple and 6 RBI’s.
    The Bombers led 3-1 after one inning and 6-1 after two, adding a single run in the fourth, four in the fifth and three in the sixth.

  • VJHS teams at conference meet

    The Vandalia Junior High School seventh-grade boys finished second in the conference track meet with 58 points.
    Individual results were:
    • Second place – Hagy, long jump and 200-meter dash; Meyers, 400-meter dash; DuPlayee, pole vault; and Barker, shot put.
    • Third place – Hagy, 100-meter dash; Nestrick, 200-meter run and high jump; Wilkerson, 400-meter run; 4x200 relay team of Eller, Cody, Kelly and DuPlayee; and 4x400 relay team of Wilkerson, McCall, Eller and Meyers.

  • Ten from VJHS going to state

    Ten members of the Vandalia Junior High School track teams have advanced to the IESA State Track Meet.
    For the boys, advancing to state were Christian DuPlayee and Leo Krueger in the pole vault, at heights of 8 feet, 9 inches and 9 feet, 3 inches, respectively; and the 4x100 relay team of Pierson Wilkerson, Lendon Isaiah, Preston Nestrick and Matthew Hagy (Garrett Meyers is alternate).
    On the girls side, seventh-graders Jenna Protz advanced by placing third in the discus at 79 feet, 10 inches and Josie Womack by placing fifth in the pole vault at 6 feet, 9 inches.

  • VCHS Bass Club team places fifth at tourney

    The Vandalia Community High School Bass Club participated in the South Central Cougar Fishing Invitational on Saturday, May 5, at Centralia Lake.
    Vandalia brought home a fifth place finish from the team of Brendon Boley and Johnny Lotz.
    Twenty-three teams participated in the tournament.
    Other Vandalia teams were Dawson McKinny and Stevie Lach, Clark Pearson and Zane Ulmer, Michael Bowles and Conner Satterthwaite, and Tucker Beesley and Noah Sasse.

  • Lady Vandals fall in 12 at Pana Regional

    The Lady Vandals season came to an end on Monday with a 6-5 loss in 12 innings at the Pana regional contest.
    Vandalia led 2-0 after the first inning, then Pana countered with single runs in the first three innings to lead 3-2.
    The Lady Vandals knotted the scored with a run in the fifth, and they added a run in the sixth, but Pana took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth.
    Vandalia sent the game into extra innings with a run in the top of the seventh inning.

  • Vandals' season ends with loss in regional

    A three-run homer capped a seven-running fifth inning that lifted Greenville over Vandalia in regional play at Greenville on Monday.

  • Wilhour back at state

    As she was settling into her starting block of the 300-meter low hurdles at last Thursday’s sectional track meet, Brownstown/St. Elmo’s Claire Wilhour heard the public address announcer say that she had just been bumped from second to third place – and a spot in the state meet – in the long jump.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log

    • Trevor J. Alstat, 24, 1229 W. Jefferson St., Vandalia, was arrested on May 15 for an alleged probation violation. Bond was $2,500.
    • An 11-year-old Brownstown resident and a 15-year-old Indianapolis, Ind., resident were arrested on May 14 on charges of arson, knowingly criminally damage property more than $500, criminal trespass to real property and disorderly conduct. They were taken to the Madison County Juvenile Detention Center.

  • Arm Prairie Church finds its long-lost bell

    The Arm Prairie Christian Church was built in 1879, with the completion of construction possibly running into 1890, roughly making the church building close to 140 years old.
