  • Farina man indicted in federal court on 'bath salts' charge

    A Farina man is one of three individuals indicted on federal “bath salts” charges.
    Brandon L. Hewkin, 28, was indicted along with Toby L. Depoister, 32, of Edgewood, and Crystal L. Behrens, 33, of Alma, on a count of distributing and possessing with the intent to distribute Alpha-Pyrrolidinopentiophenone, also known as “bath salts.”

  • Vandalia Swimming Pool opens this Friday

    The Vandalia Swimming Pool opens for the season this Friday, weather permitting.
    The season will end on Labor Day, Sept. 3.
    Pool business hours are: Sunday-Friday, 1-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.; Saturdays, 1-5 p.m. (private parties are on Saturday evenings); and Wednesdays, 9-11 a.m.
    For the pool to be open on questionable weather days and/or nights, there must be at least 10 people present before 1:30 p.m. for the afternoon sessions and by 6:30 p.m. for evening sessions.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log

    • Jason L. Bolyard, 43, 313 N. Fourth St., Vandalia, was arrested on May 21 for failure to appear in court. Bond was $15,000, and he was released at the order of a judge.
    • James W. Berner, 37, 811 S. Front St., Ramsey, was arrested on May 20 on charges of methamphetamine possession, drug paraphernalia possession and criminal trespass. Bond was $30,000.

  • Cougars, Bombers fall in regional

    The South Central and Brownstown/St. Elmo baseball squads saw their seasons come to an end in regional play last week.
    In their regional championship, the Cougars were edged by Odin/Patoka, 6-5, at Lions Park in Kinmundy.
    South Central scored twice in the first inning, but Odin took the lead with a four-run third inning.
    The Cougars scored three runs in the top half of the fourth inning to lead 5-4, then Odin/Patoka closed out the game’s scoring with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
