  • Vandals finish tough season at 7-22

    The Vandals honored their seniors last Friday, but the team wasn’t able to come away with a win on that day or for the rest of the season.

    Vandalia lost both games at the Ish Smith Classic in Greenville on Saturday and then fell to Mater Dei, 3-2, in the opening round of the regional tournament on Monday to end the season at 7-22.

  • Lady Vandals close out season

    The Vandalia softball team ended its season with six games in five days, closing out the year with a 10-0 loss to Breese Central in the first round of the regional tournament.

    Junior Shelby Foster led the offense with a double, and junior Morgan Whightsil also had a hit in Monday's game.

    Otherwise, it was all Central, as the Lady Cougars scored in five of the six innings to leave Vandalia with a 5-27 record for the season.

    The game ended the careers of two seniors – Molli Tedrick and Alex Henna.

  • Warriors get by Mulberry Grove in regional action

    MULBERRY GROVE – After several of the early innings of Monday’s regional tournament game, Patoka coaches reminded their players that there was still a lot of game left to make up their deficit.

    It didn’t seem like it was working, but then a few breaks went Patoka’s way in the fifth inning, leading to a six-run frame that helped propel the Warriors to a 7-5 win against Mulberry Grove.

    Several Jr. High track athletes do well at state

    Many local athletes did well at recent junior high state meets, with athletes from Brownstown, Patoka and South Central participating.

    Eighth-grader Emily Bone had three top 10 finishes, and seventh-grader Alex Golden had a ninth-place finish to lead 16 qualifiers from Brownstown Junior High at the Illinois Elementary Association Class A state meet in Peoria this past weekend.

  • School record falls at last regular-season meet

    Another Vandalia boys track record fell, as the 4X200-meter relay team set a new mark at Hillsboro last Thursday.

    Senior Quenten Austin, junior Wade Cowger, sophomore Colton Woolsey and junior Ryan Ambuehl teamed up to place second in the race in 1:37.84, beating the previous record, which was set in 2009, by 1.5 seconds.

    Austin and Ambuehl now are part of all four relay records at VCHS.

    Ambuehl, Austin and Codie Jackson also had individual first-place finishes to help the Vandals place second out of three teams.

  • St. Elmo stretches winning streak to 14 games

    The area’s top two baseball teams battled on Monday in the final regular-season game of the season, and St. Elmo pushed its winning streak to 14 games with a 10-6 victory at South Central.

    St. Elmo (20-6) rides the momentum of the streak into the regional tournament, where the Eagles are a No. 2 seed and play on Thursday at Central A&M in Mowequa.

    The turnaround began on April 3, when St. Elmo was nursing a 6-6 record, but since then, the Eagles have scored at least 10 runs nine times, including the past four games.

  • VCHS HOF nomination period is open

    Nominations for this year’s Vandalia Community High School Athletic Hall of Fame are due by May 31.

    Forms should be sent to Kevin Jackson, VCHS Athletic Director, 1109 N. 8th St., Vandalia, Ill. 62471. Forms are available at the high school office and may also be dropped off there.

    In order to be nominated, the following conditions must be met: the candidate must be a graduate of VCHS, a distinguished varsity team, a former coach or a supportive fan.
