  • Tharp pushes Cougars to upset in St. Elmo Holiday Tournament

    ST. ELMO — Fischer Tharp was on a mission Wednesday night at the St. Elmo Holiday Tournament.

    Scoring 32 points, he led No. 6 South Central to a 52-48 upset win against third-seeded Cowden-Herrick in the 53rd annual event and secured his team a spot in the championship semifinals on Friday night at 7:45 p.m.

    There, the Cougars will meet No. 2 Altamont, which beat seventh-seeded Ramsey, 61-31, on Wednesday.

  • MCS Counseling adds new therapist

    MCS Counseling of Vandalia has added a new therapist, Karen Gilmore, to its counseling staff.

  • FAYCO Recycling Center Ribbon Cutting

    A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Wednesday morning at the new recycling center of FAYCO Enterprises.

    Located at 2022 Wagner St. on the north side of Vandalia, the center processes and recycles newspapers, magazines, office paper, plastic containers, cardboard, aluminum cans and steel cans.

  • Lifetime Achievement Award

    Michelle Vaughan, administrator at Vandalia Rehabilitation & Health Care Center for the past eight years, has been honored with a rare Lifetime Achievement Award by the company that owns and operates the facility.

  • Hall promoted to VP and risk officer at FNB

    Candy Hall, currently an assistant vice president at The First National Bank in Vandalia, has been promoted to vice president and senior risk officer.

  • Semifinals set in St. Elmo Holiday Tournament

    ST. ELMO — The championship and consolation semifinals have been set in this season's St. Elmo Holiday Tournament.

    On Thursday, top-seeded St. Elmo will face No. 4 Beecher City in the championship semifinals at 7:45 p.m., and the winner of game one will face either No. 2 Altamont or No. 6 South Central, which play on Friday at 7:45 p.m.

    The championship game will be on Saturday at 8 p.m.

  • Eagles, Beecher City win at St. Elmo Holiday Tournament

    The top two seeds which played on Tuesday in the first round of the 53rd annual St. Elmo Holiday Tournament were each victorious.

    No. 1 St. Elmo beat No. 8 Mulberry Grove, 56-32, and No. 4 Beecher City beat No. 5 Brownstown, 67-59.

    The remaining teams played first-round games on Wednesday night, and semifinals will be held on Thursday and Friday nights, with the finals set to begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

    The championship game is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log

    • Brandon C. Edwards, 19, Granite City, was arrested on Dec. 10 on a warrant for residential burglary. Bond was $25,000.
    • Melody A. Younker, 25, 522 N. Fifth St., Vandalia, was arrested on Dec. 10 for failure to appear in Effingham County court on a small claims matter. Bond was $250 cash.
    • Nathan L. Gaffner, 23, RR 3, Vandalia, was arrested on Dec. 9 for failure to appear in court on a small claims matter. Bond was $150 cash.
