  • Make safety a top priority in new school year

    In case you don't have children in the house, let this be your reminder that a new school year is about to begin.
    Activity is increasing around our schools – registration sessions have been held, athletic pre-season practices are under way and, hopefully, shopping trips for school clothes and supplies have been completed.
    It's a busy time of year.

  • We Apologize

    It was incorrectly stated in last week's issue that G&T Holdings had asked for a continuance in the trial for ordinance violation tickets written to the owners of the Redwood Inn for alleged smoking violations.
    The city filed the motion for the continuance, saying that a witness in the case would be unable to be present for the trial last week.
    The trial is now set for Oct. 3, with a pretrial set for Aug. 25.
    We apologize for the error.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log-Agu. 11, 2011

    • Mary C. Smith, 26, 129 W. Main St., Vandalia, was arrested on Aug. 9 for failure to appear in court on a charge of theft. Bond was $1,000.
    • Tabatha L. Sides, 35, 825 Sunset Drive, Vandalia, turned herself in on Aug. 8 on a small claims warrant. Bond was $200 cash.
    • Courtney K. Swick, 29, 526½ S. Seventh St., Vandalia, was arrested on Aug. 8 on a charge of battery. Bond was $1,000.
    • Zachary A. Pyle, 27, 102 W. Madison St., Vandalia, was arrested on Aug. 7 for failure to appear in court on a felony charge. Bond was $3,500.

  • FCHD to begin flu shot clinics in late September

    The Fayette County Health Department is committed to giving all employees flu shots and to serving the community to prevent the spread of influenza. Flu clinics will tentatively start Sept. 26 in various locations in Fayette County.
    Heath care workers have a special role in the fight against influenza. By getting vaccinated themselves, health care workers can protect their health, their families’ health and the health of their patients.

  • Museum sets new exhibits, entertainment season

    The special exhibits in the Fayette County Museum for August are Indian Artifacts and Old School Items.
    The museum welcomed 225 visitors during July. A group from the Taylorville Christian Church toured the museum.
    The Fayette County Museum has announced this season of entertainment. The events are all historical this year.
    “The Fall of the Sparrows: Reverend Frances Springer and His Boatload of Orphans” will be presented by William Furry, executive director of the Illinois State Historical Society, on Sept. 18.
