    In 1913, the state of Pennsylvania, under Gov. John K. Tener, hosted a soldiers' reunion at Gettysburg to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the battle.

    Marathon sign going on eBay

    After hearing a number of people express interest about the Marathon sign at the former Tri-County Petroleum property, the city of Vandalia has taken the sign to Liberty Stop, Drop and More for placement on eBay.

    Relay team holds trivia night

    The Harvesters of Hope Relay for Life team will hold a trivia night on Saturday, March 31, at Bethel Baptist Church, located northwest of Vandalia on Ill. Route 185.

  • St. Louis man killed in I-70 accident

    A St. Louis man was killed in an accident near the Brownstown exit of Interstate 70 early Saturday morning.

    • Haron Denton, 35, 1826 W. Jefferson St., Apt. 3, Vandalia, was arrested on March 19 on a charge of domestic battery. No bond information was listed.
    • Christopher R. Lindley, 20, 1556 Newport Road, Mulberry Grove, was arrested on March 19 on charges of reckless driving and illegal consumption of alcohol. Bond was $2,000.
    • William A. Sides, 32, 1229 N. Sixth St., Vandalia, was arrested on March 19 on a warrant for escape. Bond was $5,000.

    Homestead Address Change…for  the Chicken Roost, That is
    The girls, Blackie and Rhonda (hens), moved over the weekend from the little pen to the big chicken pen with an adjoining suite, complete with two roosts of different altitudes, rain-proof roof  (and drop-side-walls when needed), elevated water pan (to keep dirt out of their water when scratching for bugs) and their favorite nest for laying eggs, which is an old foot tub/bucket.
    They both would rather use it than the nice plastic, pretty pink crate we had bought for them.

    Belinda Harpster of St. Peter spent Tuesday and Wednesday last week in Gray Summit, Mo., with daughter Mahala.
    On Tuesday evening, they were dinner guests of Dale, Donna, Nathan and Nick Jacquin of Washington, Mo. On Wednesday, they finished unpacking and taking care of unfinished business.
    Mahala began her new job on Thursday at Purina Farms.
