    Many athletes that spent their high school years in Fayette County have moved on to play for college or professional teams. Below are the athletes who played recently.

  • Clymer, Ashdown worthy of awards

    As usual, the Vandalia Chamber of Commerce has identified two individuals worthy of recognition as it selected its 2012 Abe Award recipients. They were presented their awards last Thursday at the chamber’s annual banquet.
    Honored this year in the non-chamber-member category was retired Vandalia businessman Abe Clymer. For the chamber-member award, YMCA executive director John Ashdown was selected. Both have made significant contributions to the community and are deserving of the award.

  • Brownstown cheerleaders are state-bound

    The Brownstown High School cheerleading squad qualified for the Illinois High School Association state competition, which will be held on Friday and Saturday in Bloomington.

    In addition, the Lady Bombers qualified for the Illinois Cheerleading Coaches Association Championships, which will be held on Feb. 11 in Springfield.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log

    • Michael E. Wehrle, 58, 2407 Whitler Lane, Vandalia, was arrested on Jan. 31 on a charge of unlawful use of a weapon. Bond was $1,000.
    • A 15-year-old youth was arrested on Jan. 29 on a charge of aggravated battery. The youth was transferred to another county.
    • A 15-year-old youth was arrested on Jan. 28 on a charge of battery. No further information was given.
    • Mikel R. Jahraus, 61, RR 1, Farina, was arrested on Jan. 27 on a charge of unlawful use of a weapon. Bond was $1,000.

  • Volleyball Club Wins Tourney

    The Vandalia Vertical 15's volleyball club went undefeated to place first in its division at a 16's tournament in Champaign in January.

  • Texas man killed in I-70 accident on Monday

    A Texas man was killed in an accident early Monday morning on Interstate 70 in eastern Fayette County.
    Fayette County Coroner Bruce Bowen said that James Tinsley II of El Paso sustained fatal injuries when struck by a tractor-trailer shortly before daylight.
    According to the Illinois State Police, a tractor-trailer driven by Tinsley was involved in a crash, which Bowen said resulted in his lights being disabled.

  • Sports Briefs (Feb. 2)

    Patoka man to be inducted at SIU

    A former Patoka athlete will be inducted to the Southern Illinois University Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday.
    John Garrett is among the six inductees in the 2012 class.

    Garrett, who was a 5-foot-10, point guard nicknamed "Mouse," scored 995 points over 72 games (13.8 points per game) during his three-year career at SIU. When he played, from 1969-72, freshmen were not eligible.
