    Owen Harpster of Cape Girardeau, Mo., spent Friday and Saturday night at the home of his grandparents, Dane and Belinda Harpster of St. Peter. Mitch and Gretchen Harpster joined them on Saturday night.

    Belated Mother’s Day Recognition
    Sneaking a peek at our neighbor’s longhorn pasture, we caught an endearing picture of a mother longhorn cow and her baby. This is a rather rare close-up, as these cows don’t know us that well and they usually get between us and the baby, which this mother did a few seconds later.
    In the background, you can see the daddy longhorn keeping an eye on us, and he joined the mother in shielding their baby a few minutes later.

  • Ambuehl makes state finals in 110-meter hurdles

    For the second straight spring, the Vandals will be represented in the state finals of the 110-meter hurdles.

    Vandalia senior Ryan Ambuehl placed first in his heat and had the No. 4 time in that race after running a time of 15.41 seconds in Thursday's preliminaries on the campus of Eastern Illinois University. Last season, Quenten Austin placed sixth in the race.

    The 110-meter hurdle final will be on Saturday at about 1:10 p.m.

    He also ran in the 400-meter prelims, posting a time of 52.67 seconds.

    Several Lake Land College dental hygiene instructors and students from the senior dental hygiene class recently traveled to Pigeon Forge, Tenn., for a volunteer service learning experience.
