  • Master Gardener deadline is Thursday

    If you have an interest in gardening and want to learn more about gardening, fruit trees and how to manage insect pests, then you may want to check out the University of Illinois Extension’s Master Gardener program.
    More than 3,500 master gardeners across Illinois volunteer in their community and share their knowledge with others through their local Extension office.
    Master gardeners are an important part of the educational mission of local University of Illinois Extension offices.

  • Carole Cripe Green picked for GEM Award

    Carole Cripe Green, a Vandalia area native who is a past state legislator and currently serves as a lobbyist, was chosen to receive the annual GEM Award by the Fort Myers Republican Women’s Club during the Tuesday, Dec. 13, luncheon meeting.

    The GEM Award represents individuals who have shown Good leadership, Effort in establishing programs and policies, and being a Major contributor to the community through time and effort.

  • CEFS seeks VITA volunteers

    The C.E.F.S. Economic Opportunity Corp. is seeking volunteer tax preparers to join its VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Program.
    This program provides tax assistance/preparation services at no cost for low-to-moderate-income people (based on income eligibility).
    The season will begin in early February and continue through mid-April.
    Volunteers must meet these qualifications:
    • Enjoy helping people.
    • Be patient and understanding of others.
    • Be committed to providing a community service.

  • SWCD still offers electronic recycling

    The Fayette County Soil & Water Conservation District is continuing to offer electronic recycling.
    Recycling is available at the SWCD office, 301 S. Third St. in Vandalia, from 1-5 p.m. every Wednesday.
    Those using the service may put items into boxes inside the recycling trailer. Larger items, such as televisions, can be placed in the open area of the trailer.

    Relay for Life meeting is Tuesday
    A kickoff meeting for Fayette County Relay for Life will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Joe's Pizza and Pasta, 1227 N. Fourth St., Vandalia.
    All captains and team members are encouraged to attend. Anyone who wishes to help with this year's Relay for Life may also attend.
