  • Summer band invite given

    Local musicians are being invited to participate in the inaugural Vandalia Community Summer Band.
    The band will rehearse from 6-7:30 p.m. the week of Monday, June 18.
    The week will conclude with an outdoor performance on the lawn of the Vandalia Statehouse on Friday, June 22. There is no charge for admission, and attendees are encouraged to take lawn chairs or blankets.

  • Matar awarded Medal of Valor

    A Charleston firefighter and paramedic who is a former Vandalia resident and volunteer firefighter was awarded a Medal of Valor on Monday night for his actions during a fire on Interstate 57 early last month.

    ✔ Bingo is held at the Vandalia Moose Lodge, starting at 7 p.m., with Lightning at 5:30 p.m.

    Thursday, June 7

    ✔ A Mission Possible rummage sale for charity to benefit SAFE (Sexual Assault & Family Emergencies) will be held this Thursday, Friday and Saturday at The Back Pain Center, 427 W. Orchard St. The rummage sale is from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday. Mission Possible is a charity within Irwin Seating Co. in Altamont. Proceeds will be used to support the SAFE missions and the families it serves.

  • Thrill Hill bridge now open

    Though the state still needs to complete an inspection on the new Thrill Hill bridge, that bridge is now open for traffic.

  • Conflict with 2 downtown walls

    The owner of a downtown building who was given a TIF grant in April for improvements to one of the building’s exterior walls told Vandalia officials that he is unable to do the work at this time.

  • Capitol View Restaurant destroyed by fire late Monday (Video)

    An investigation is continuing  into the fire late Monday night and early Tuesday morning that destroyed a downtown Vandalia restaurant.

    Public Hearing Canceled – The June 4 public hearing of the Regional Board of School Trustees scheduled to be held at the ROE #3 Professional Development Center has been canceled.

    ✔ The summer reading program at Evans Public Library, "Reading Takes You Everywhere," begins. Children age 3 through recently graduated high school seniors can sign up to win prizes for books read all summer.
    ✔ Willms and Associates is holding a retirement party with light refreshments for 54-year employee Carol Severns from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at its office at 411 W. Gallatin St. in Vandalia.

  • Evans Library’s summer program begins

    Evans Public Library in Vandalia is inviting local youth to participate in its summer reading program, “Reading Takes You Everywhere.”
    Co-sponsored by McDonald’s, the reading program begins this Friday.
    “Reading Takes You Everywhere” offers two reading programs, one for children age three through sixth grade and one for students in junior high through recently graduated high school seniors. Students in grades 4-6 may choose either program.

  • Honoring our fallen soldiers

    “We are here today because of the veterans who did not come home,” Donnie Smail of Brownstown VFW Post 9770 said during Monday’s Memorial Day service at the Veterans’ Memorial Wall in Brownstown City Park.
