  • Farina man indicted in federal court on 'bath salts' charge

    A Farina man is one of three individuals indicted on federal “bath salts” charges.
    Brandon L. Hewkin, 28, was indicted along with Toby L. Depoister, 32, of Edgewood, and Crystal L. Behrens, 33, of Alma, on a count of distributing and possessing with the intent to distribute Alpha-Pyrrolidinopentiophenone, also known as “bath salts.”

  • Vandalia Swimming Pool opens this Friday

    The Vandalia Swimming Pool opens for the season this Friday, weather permitting.
    The season will end on Labor Day, Sept. 3.
    Pool business hours are: Sunday-Friday, 1-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.; Saturdays, 1-5 p.m. (private parties are on Saturday evenings); and Wednesdays, 9-11 a.m.
    For the pool to be open on questionable weather days and/or nights, there must be at least 10 people present before 1:30 p.m. for the afternoon sessions and by 6:30 p.m. for evening sessions.

  • Poppy sales set for May 25

    National Poppy Day is Friday, May 25, and poppies will be available for donations on that day.
    Tracing back to 1918, the poppy is a call to honor living veterans as well as those who lost their lives in service to this country.
    After the battles of World War I, the blood red poppy suddenly bloomed and flourished in burial grounds in France and Belgium, turning the graveyards into fields of brilliant red.

  • Old State Burial Ground work day is this Saturday

    The second annual work day for improvements at the Old State Burial Ground in Vandalia is this Saturday.
    The Community Action Day at the cemetery, located on Edwards Street between First and Second streets, is from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
    The main focus will be cleaning headstones, but volunteers are also needed to help put out 87 flags on veterans’ graves for Memorial Day, removing debris, mapping, photographing headstones and record-keeping.
