  • School board takes personnel action

    The Vandalia Board of Education held a brief special meeting on Monday to handle a four-item agenda regarding school employees for the upcoming school year.
    First, the board passed a resolution authorizing the honorable dismissal of two regular route school bus drivers, Whitney Smith and Donna Evans.
    Second, the board approved a motion to employ Danielle Stone and Stacy Thull as TLC (Training for Life Choices) aides at Vandalia Community High School and Okaw Area Vocational Center.

  • Fayette Water conducting income survey

    To obtain favorable interest rates on loans from the federal government for its water line extensions, Fayette Water Co. will conduct an income survey for the area to be served by those extensions.
    The rural water company is working with the Rural Community Assistance Program to conduct the survey for a number of residences in Bear Grove, Sharon and Shafter townships in the near future.
    Fayette Water is seeking low-interest loans from the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Rural Development for the extension of water lines into those townships.

  • Mabrys seek dismissal of city's complaint

    The Vandalia couple that plans to open a restaurant on Vandalia Lake as soon as next week has responded to the city’s legal attempt to prevent the operation of that business at that location.
    The attorney for Steve “Luke” and Latisha Mabry filed on Monday a motion asking for dismissal of the city’s complaint for declaratory judgment.

  • Rail crossing discussions

    The Vandalia City Council is scheduled to decide in the near future whether to place stop signs on streets along the local rail line, and almost all aldermen were present on Monday to hear comments about that proposal.
    However, they may not even have to make that decision, based on a couple of comments made during a meeting of the council’s streets and public safety committees.

  • Active Shooter Training

    Active shooter training was held for officers with the Fayette County Sheriff's Office last week at the former Washington School building in Vandalia.

    “We do a lot of bears,” Mike Rhodes will tell you about the chainsaw carving business that he and his daughter, Wendy, operate in rural St. Elmo.

  • Mabrys file motion to dismiss

    The Vandalia couple planning to open a restaurant on Vandalia Lake filed on Monday its response to a city suit aimed at preventing them from operating that business.

    Steve “Luke” and Latisha Mabry’s attorney, David Cates of Swansea, filed a motion to dismiss the city’s request for a declaratory judgment in Fayette County Circuit Court.

    In their motion, the Mabrys contend that their property is outside city limits and that the city has “has no jurisdiction beyond their corporate limits.”
