  • New Radar for County

    Fayette County State's Attorney Joshua Morrison, left, and Sheriff Aaron Lay are shown with the sheriff's office's new Pro Laser III infrared Lidar System radar gun.

    The purchase of the $1,500 speed gun, used to measure the speed of vehicles, was made possible through Morrison's equipment grant program. The program is funded by forfeitures and seizures through Morrison's office.

    Historical Vandalia's 2013-14 Season of Entertainment schedule is as follows:
    • Sunday, Sept. 22 – Barbara Kay of Glen Carbon will perform as Clara Barton in telling how Barton's work led to the development of the American Red Cross.
    • Nov. 10 – Historical Markers of Illinois will be presented by William Furry of Springfield, executive director of the Illinois State Historical Society.

  • Judge affirms ruling on Fulk overhear

    A judge last Thursday affirmed his decision not to suppress evidence in the case of a Farina man charged with solicitation of murder for hire.
    “I agree with the state and with (my) first ruling” not to suppress an overhear, Judge James Roberts ruled at the conclusion of Thursday’s hearing in the Mark Fulk case.
    Fulk was charged in early April with trying to arrange for the murder of his wife, and the prosecution’s evidence includes an overhear tape recorded by the Illinois State Police.

  • Well gives rundown on school finances

    With the district’s annual budget hearing pushed back to 5 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 30, the Vandalia Board of Education on Tuesday dealt with a light agenda at its regular monthly meeting.
    Superintendent Rich Well reported that the district “has a lot of money going out right now” in first-of-the-year expenditures, but he did note that the first installment of property tax revenues has arrived. Those revenues, however, came in after Sept. 1, so they were not reflected in the current financial statements for the month ended Aug. 31.

  • Code official leaving

    The city of Vandalia will begin a search for a new code official, one that the mayor hopes will not take long to complete.
    Mayor Rick Gottman announced at Monday’s city council meeting that Keith Meadows will be stepping down as code official in the near future.
    Gottman said that Meadows, who has served as the city’s code official for a little more than 11 years, will be moving with his wife, Anita, to Missouri, to be near their daughter and new grandchild.

  • Pool-saving efforts continue

    The Vandalia Park District Board agreed last week to take the first step toward substantial improvements to the Vandalia Municipal Swimming Pool.
