  • Workin' on the Railroad

    Traffic on the east-west CSX line through Vandalia has resumed after an interruption due to repair work on the railroad bridge over the Kaskaskia River.

    A source told The Leader-Union recently that divers with Undersea Engineering in Pensacola, Fla., were used to fill a void on one of the bridge piers. The void, he said, was discovered as a result of a side scan done by CSX.

  • County 4-H'ers show livestock at state fair

    Fayette County 4-Hers competed against exhibitors from throughout the state in the Junior Livestock Shows at the Illinois State Fair, Aug. 8-18.  
    In Junior Beef, Seth Purcell exhibited the second place Maine Anjou Heifer, 9/3/11-9/24/11.
    Jordan Schaal took top honors in Junior Sheep with her champion Dorset wether; champion Shropshire Wether; first-place Dorset Wether 114-156 pounds; first-place Shropshire Wether 114-137 pounds.

  • Fayette County 4-H'ers earn Superior Awards

    Nearly 2,200 4-H exhibits from across the state were evaluated and displayed during the Illinois State Fair, and Fayette County 4-H’ers were part of that exhibition, with 14 members making the trip to Springfield Monday, Aug. 12, to have their project work evaluated.
    They earned the right by being selected in the top of their division at the Fayette County 4-H Show June 28-29 in Brownstown.

    Dane and Belinda Harpster of St. Peter met Ben, Amanda, Madison and Dru Eller of Jackson, Mo., in Vandalia on Friday. They enjoyed dinner at The Copper Penny, then later visited at the Eller lake house.

    Shimkus to visit FAYCO next Wednesday

    U.S. Rep. John Shimkus (R-Ill., 19th District) will visit FAYCO Enterprises in Vandalia from 12:30-1 p.m. next Wednesday.
    Before and after his visit, FAYCO staff will be offering tours to the public.

    Evans Library offering ‘Read for Fines’

    Evans Public Library in Vandalia has started a new program that offers children a new way to pay off fines.

  • Lions Car and Truck Show is this weekend

    The fourth annual Vandalia Lions Club Car and Truck Show will be held this Saturday and Sunday at Vandalia Lake.
    The show, formerly known as the Midwest All-Ford Nationals, features 36 classes for vehicles from 1900-present.
    Three awards will be awarded in each class, as well as four special awards being presented for both custom and stock vehicles. Along with best of show in each category, awards will be given for paint, engine and interior.
