  • New coroner keeping busy

    The county’s new coroner told Fayette County Board members that he has been quite busy since moving into the position at the beginning of the year.
    In his report to the board on Tuesday night, David Hejl told board members that there have been eight coroner cases and three autopsies since Jan. 1.
    Hejl also said that he has been working, on average, 31 hours per week, though he is attempting to reduce the weekly hours for the part-time position.

    After hearing the testimony of an Illinois State Police investigator, a judge ruled that a Mulberry Grove man arrested last month on murder charges should stand trial.

  • Garrison hired for Vandalia superintendent post

    At a special meeting on Wednesday night, the Vandalia Board of Education voted unanimously to hire Dr. Jennifer Garrison as the district's superintendent of schools.
    Garrison, a 1995 graduate of Vandalia Community High School, is currently serving as the superintendent of the Sandoval School District.
    She succeeds Rich Well, who resigned from the post a couple of months ago.
    Nick Casey, who is the director of the Okaw Area Vocational Center, is serving as the district's interim superintendent.
