  • 25 years for sex crimes

    A Vandalia man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison on predatory criminal sexual assault charges.

  • 'Sanctuary' county

    Following the lead of a neighboring county, Fayette County is now a “sanctuary” for gun owners.
    The Fayette County Board on Tuesday unanimously approved a resolution stating its opposition to bills before state legislators that would limit the rights of gun owners as stated in the U.S. Constitution.
    None of the board members spoke before voting on the measure, but someone in the audience did.
    “For too long, Chicago has been making gun laws that affect Southern Illinois,” Mike Black said.

    Resolution opposing the passage of HB1465, HB1467, HB1468, HB1469, SB1657, any trailer bill, or any bill similar too, or any bill where the 100th Illinois General Assembly desires to restrict the Individual right of U.S. Citizens as protected by the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution.
    WHEREAS, the Right of the People to Keep and Bear Arms is guaranteed and under the Constitution of the State of Illinois, and;

  • City OKs, supports Eagle badge project

    The Vandalia City Council not only OK’d a Eagle badge project for a local Boy Scout that will improve Vandalia’s Little Community Garden, it agreed to support that project.

  • Friends & Families of FCH holding 5K event on May 12

    Friends & Families of Fayette County Hospital will hold their annual Heart & Sole 5K Fun Run/Walk on Saturday, May 12.
    Registration is from 7-7:45 a.m. and the event begins at 8 a.m. at the Vandalia Shrine Club, East 2000 Ave.
    The entry fee is $25. The signup deadline to guarantee a T-shirt was Saturday, but for those who signup this week, T-shirts will be made and handed out.

  • Saturday is call-in day for pageants

    The call-in day for Fayette County Fair queen pageants is this Saturday.
    To be a Little Miss contestant, girls must be Fayette County residents and between the ages of 5 and 7 years old by July 16. To enter, call 618-780-0765 on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.
    To be a Jr. Miss contestant, girls must be Fayette County residents entering grades 6-8. To enter, call 618-780-0765 on Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m.

  • Summer Lunches for Kids work begins

    Organizers are gearing up for this year’s edition of Summer Lunches for Kids, which gets under way on June 4.
    As they plan the program for this summer, organizers are seeking volunteers and donors.
    The free lunch program will run from June 4-Aug. 1, from 11-11:30 a.m., on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the following locations:
    • Vandalia – Fayette County Health Department, 416 W. Edwards St.; Rogier Park, gazebo in the circle drive on West Fillmore Street; and new this year, Kelly Park on West Main Street.

  • Shobonier man dies in one-car accident

    A Shobonier man died from injuries sustained in a one-vehicle accident on Saturday evening.
    According to the Illinois State Police, a pickup truck driven by Travis E. Collier, 25, was found on its top in a creek on Boat Dock Road, east of Bond Avenue, one mile west of Patoka in Marion County.
    The state police said that based on a preliminary investigation, they believe that the Collier vehicle was eastbound on Boat Dock Road when it crossed the centerline and went off the roadway to the left onto the north shoulder.
