• VCHS Band Performs

    The Vandalia Community High School marching band performed at last Friday's opening football game. In the first, tuba player Patrick Bauer plays on the field prior to the game.   • New Brownstown Teachers

    The Brownstown School District has two new teachers this year. Elizabeth Warren, left, is the instrumental music instructor for grades 5-12, and Lisa Beck is a special education teacher at the high school.

    Bradley University
    Rose Freeman of Vandalia graduated from Bradley University in May with a degree in marketing.
    Freeman, the daughter of Phil and Melody Freeman, is now employed as an admissions representative at Bradley University.

  • CEFS awards scholarships to students

    The C.E.F.S. Economic Opportunity Corp. Board of Directors recently awarded $18,900 in educational scholarships to 30 individuals who are pursuing post-secondary education.
    The educational scholarships were made available through funding provided by the Community Services Block Grant Program from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.
    C.E.F.S. Economic Opportunity Corp.’s Community Service Block Grant Scholarship Program was established in 1985.

    As schools reopen, it is important to remember school bus safety.
    Across the US, a disturbing trend has emerged – motorists who fail to stop for school buses in loading zones have caused an Increase in fatalities.
    Nearly half of the deaths across the nation that occurred near school buses were attributed to motorists who failed to stop for a school bus that had activated its red lights and stop arm.

    School of Optometry

    Micah A. Jahraus Brasel of Vandalia has graduated from Indiana University School of Optometry on May 7.
    Brasel was one of 68 students to receive a doctor of optometry degree after completing the four-year optometry program.
    She is the daughter of Larry and Cheryl Jahraus.
    She received her biological medicine degree with a minor in chemistry from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville in 2005 and is as a 2002 graduate from South Central High School..

  • Head Start seeking book donations, volunteers

    In preparation for the upcoming school year, CEFS Head Start is introducing “The Book Project” to replenish the dwindling supply of tattered and worn out books in the Head Start lending libraries.
    Offered in every Head Start classroom and each Early Head Start region, the lending library gives children the opportunity to take books home and share with their families.
    Currently, Head Start’s book supply contains only a few books, many in terrible condition.
