• KC Board of Trustees Scholarships

    Three area students have been awarded Kaskaskia College Board of Trustees Scholarships for the 2017-18 school year – Rachel Green of Vandalia, and Katelyn Dugan and Kelsie Waters of Mulberry Grove.

  • Kaskaskia College

    Beginning beekeeping class
    The Kaskaskia College Department of Industrial and Continuing Education will hold a beginning beekeeping class throughout the KC District in August.  The course will be live at the KC Vandalia Campus and shown simultaneously at the Nashville, Salem and Trenton Education Centers.
    This class will meet on Monday, Aug. 7, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., and will be an introductory course designed to acquaint the students with basic beekeeping.

  • First Presbyterian has 'Tools for School'

    Tools for School, a program which provides free school supplies to Fayette County in-need students pre-kindergarten through junior college will be in operation at First Presbyterian Church in Vandalia on the following dates and times:
    • Wednesday, Aug. 9, 9 a.m.-7 p.m.
    • Thursday, Aug. 10, 9 a.m.-7 p.m.
    • Friday, Aug. 11, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
    • Saturday, Aug. 12, 9 a.m.-noon.
    Those who will be picking up supplies are to enter through the north door of the church, located at 1221 W. Fillmore St., Vandalia.

  • First Methodist holds Backpack 2 School

    The First United Methodist Church in Vandalia will again be hosting “Backpack 2 School” at the church’s Family Life Center at Fourth and Main streets in Vandalia, from 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 8.
    Any school child, accompanied by a parent or guardian, can receive a free backpack containing coupons and some free giveaways.
    The event is planned as a fun time, with games, activities, face-painting, free hair cuts and refreshments.
    Two bicycles will be given away, along with many other prizes donated by local businesses.

  • Area school districts set registration dates

    Online registration opened at 10 a.m. on Monday. To complete all registration items, parents use the parent portal at TeacherEase (www.teacherease.com).
    Student fees can be paid online.
    Families new to the district can go online to www.teacherease.com/NewFamilyRegistration.aspx?refid=00d6c98b-e4a6-45cb-....
    District registration will be held from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. next Wednesday at Vandalia Junior High School.
    The first day of student attendance will be Thursday, Aug. 17.

  • Foundation seeks future nominees for award

    The Vandalia Alumni and Friends Foundation is always accepting nominations for its Distinguished Alumni Award.
    The award recognizes and honors exceptional VCHS graduates within the areas of professional, personal and civic achievement.
    Nominees must:
    • Be a graduate of VCHS.
    • Have graduated at least 20 years prior to the nomination.
    • Have outstanding accomplishments in his or her profession, or have made significant contributions to his or her community or society.

  • Donley this year's recipient of Distinguished Alumni Award

    A 1983 graduate of Vandalia Community High School who is a chemical engineer with a strong background in handling hazardous materials is this year’s lone selection of the Vandalia Alumni and Friends Foundation’s Distinguished Alumni Award.

  • County hikes fees

    Upon receiving the results of a cost study recommending that the county increase many of its fees, the Fayette County Board approved those increases.
    The board also approved an agreement to have the firm that performed that cost analysis to serve as an operations consultant to the county.
    Bruce DeLashmit of the Bloomington-based Bellwether LLC told board members that the cost study of the county clerk and sheriff offices showed that fee increases are needed.

    A Vandalia student is among 86 business and management students at the University of Illinois Springfield inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma honor society chapter.
    Noah Emerick was inducted into the chapter during a ceremony on Saturday, April 8, in Brookens Auditorium.
    Beta Gamma Sigma is the international honor society serving business programs accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.
