In the first week of the VYO season, Vandalia was able to sweep Litchfield across the board, picking up a season opening win for all four teams.

5th grade

In the first football game for the Vandal fifth-graders, they won, 8-6. The Vandals were able to move the ball and generate some offense, but managed just one score. The Vandal defense played well in its season opener. Overall, it was a great effort for the first game of their careers.

In what proved to be a defensive battle, the young Vandals won, 20-0. The Vandals got on the scoreboard first, when they intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown to take the lead at halftime 6-0.
It was the passing game that enabled the Vandals to move the ball in the second half. The Vandals scored on a pass play that was called back because of a penalty. Shortly after, they were able to duplicate another pass play for a long touchdown. The scoring wasn’t complete until the Vandals fullback scored on a 40-yard run that showed speed and great blocking by the offensive line.

Litchfield came out of the gate strong, but the heat and lack of numbers was too great against the seventh-grade Vandals, who won, 14-0.  After a short first series, the Vandals offense got on track with two long runs, the second being a 30-yard touchdown scamper.
On Litchfield”s next possession the Vandals' defense was up to the challenge and on the second play from scrimmage the Vandals returned an errant Litchfield pass 47 yards for the second and final score of the heat-shortened game.

The eighth-graders also got off to a great start by winning their season opener, 22-12.  A solid defensive effort and overall sound performance for the first game the Vandals held Litchfield’s offense to minimal yardage.
