Vandals top Aces to go 2-0 in Mohawk Classic

Blake Morrison scored 16 of his team-high 30 points as Vandalia jumped out to a big fourth-quarter lead, then held on to defeat Mulberry Grove, 62-56, in an offsite game of the Morrisonville Mohawk Classic at Vandalia.

Vandalia led by as many as 12 several times in the fourth quarter, but Courtney Latham kept the Aces in the game with 10 of his game-high 31 points.
With a tie score at halftime, Vandalia took a 40-37 lead at the end of the third quarter with a steal and a basket by Blake Barth.
Barth put the Vandals up 49-40, and Morrison made it 52-42 with a traditional three-point play.
Vandalia was up by 12, 54-42, on a Barth basket, again at 56-44 on a Morrison bucket and again 58-46 on two Morrison free throws.
But Latham connected on two-pointer and two treys to make it 58-52.
The Vandals were up 60-52 after two free throws by Matthew Wells, and Wyatt Criner connected with 12.6 seconds to make it 60-54.
After Vandalia again went up by eight, Dante Latham scored as time wound down to put the final score at 62-56.
The loss was the second straight loss for Mulberry Grove, which was undefeated at 13-0 prior to the start of the tournament.

Vandalia 71, Carlinville 54
Vandalia led all the way and outscored Carlinville 19-6 in the fourth quarter on Monday to pick up a 71-54 win in their first game in the Morrisonville Mohawk Classic.
Blake Morrison led the Vandals with 21 points and Blake Barth added 16 points. Matthew Wells and Mitchell Casey each contributed 11.

The Vandals fell to .500 on the season with two losses over the weekend.
On Friday, Litchfield extended a one-point lead after three quarters to beat Vandalia, 71-68. On Saturday, Pickneyville, a vote-getter in the Dec. 6 state rankings, led 16-4 after one quarter on its way to a 63-30 win.
In Friday’s contest, Sam Painter scored 11 of his game-high 25 points in the first quarter, but Vandalia led 19-18.
The Vandals led by three at halftime, 32-29, but the Purple Panthers led after three quarters with a 24-20 edge in that quarter. Litchfield then outscored the Vandals in the final quarter to take the win.
Ethan Washburn of Litchfield led all scorers with 26, and he and Painter accounted for 51 of the Purple Panthers’ points.
Blake Barth led Vandalia with 24 points, and Blake Morrison and Mitchell Casey were also in double digits with 21 and 13, respectively.
Nokomis 54, Mulberry Grove 23
Mulberry Grove suffered its first loss of the season at the tournament on Monday.
The Aces were 13-1 entering Tuesday’s offsite tournament game at Vandalia on Tuesday.

St. Elmo/Brownstown outscored Ramsey 47-16 in the middle two quarters to breeze to victory on Tuesday.
The Eagles’ Andy Goldsborough led all scorers with 21 points, and teammates Bryton Pruett and Jace McWhorter contributed 18 and 14, respectively.

On Friday, Windsor/Stew-Stras outscored the Eagles 17-8 in the final quarter to secure a win.
On Saturday, Newton held a 30-16 edge in the fourth quarter in defeating St. Elmo/Brownstown.
